A new edition with additional notes. Thomas Gray was a poet, letter writer and Cambridge Professor. An incredibly literary talent, Gray was offered the position of Poet Laureate in 1757 despite having only published 13 poems. Gray would decline the position. Gray's seminal work is the poem ' Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard' is one that was met with immediate success and leading to many of the poems phrasing to enter the English Lexicon including 'far for the madding crowd', and 'kindred spirit' to name but a few. In the publisher's original binding. Externally worn. Heavy bumping to the head and tail of the spine, resulting in loss to the backstrip. Cracks to both spines, with loss to each of the spine labels. Bumping to the extremities. Marks to the front and rear boards. Cracks to both the front and rear joints of each volume. The rear boards of each volume are at risk of becoming detached, with the front and rear hinges of each volume strained. Spotting to the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with spotting, heavier to the first and last pages. Good Only. book.

In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the boards. Light marks to the boards and spines. A little fading to the spines. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Very Good. book.
