In his political campaigning, he never sought high office, preferring to be "a foot soldier of the revolution". An important selection of types by eminent European type designers, collected together by Swiss typographer Rudolf Hostettler. It shows book faces, title faces, and with a table of origin of the types. Condition: Quite a scarce first edition, but this copy in fair condition only. The binding is rubbed and bumped to the spine, with some peeling way at the joints. Covers marked, corners bumped. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. TYPE FACES IN USE AT THE CURWEN PRESS, TOGETHER WITH A SELECTION OF PRINTER'S FLOWERS, SWELLED RULES, VIGNETTES, BORDERS, ETC. London: The Curwen Press, North Street, Plaistow, 1957. First edition. Quarto folding type-specimen booklet, 12 pp. A particularly attractive piece of Curwen Press printing and an important primary document for the typographic resources of one of Britain's most influential twentieth-century printing houses. The decorative black and turquoise wrapper incorporates repeated floral and ornamental borders around the central title panel, while the contents demonstrate a wide range of display faces including Fat Face, Fry's Ornamented, Figgins Shaded, Bodoni, Albertus, Maximilian, Orplid, Gill Sans, Perpetua and Times, together with extensive selections of Typefounders and Monotype borders, printer's flowers, swelled rules and vignettes. The final page is explicitly dated "The Curwen Press · 1957." Such specimen books reveal the practical design vocabulary available to Curwen's compositors and designers during the period in which the Press was closely associated with leading British artists and illustrators including Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, John Piper, Paul and John Nash, Barnett Freedman, Graham Sutherland and Edward Ardizzone. Both a functional printer's reference and a carefully designed object in its own right, the booklet offers valuable evidence of Curwen's mid-century approach to typography, ornament and page design. Very good indeed, slightly creased and rubbed, otherwise clean and well preserved. Now housed in a clear acetate sleeve, Design A. Stock code 004193. Location: Ephemera Drawer, Bookroom.…
