Uniform publisher's blind-embossed green cloth by Westleys, titled in gilt on spines; printed endpapers; 104 + 69pp. Printed binder's ticket to rear pastedown of each volume. A few old bookseller's marks to prelims; ownership signatures of Edward Dowden to…front endpapers, dated 1863; scattered pencil marginalia and a few textual notes to rear blanks, apparently also in Dowden's hand. Spines slightly age-darkened, though titling still perfectly legible; slight fraying to cloth at spine ends, still a tight, Very Good pair, internally fresh and sound. Quite nice pairing and excellent association copies of Arnold's two volumes of lectures on the translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey; in the words of one scholar, these lectures are ".the North Star by which all subsequent translators of Homer have steered, and the gold standard by which all translations of Homer are judged." Arnold's insistence upon attention to fidelity over style and to historical context over anachronism have indeed continued to influence translation theory well beyond the context of Classical sources, and these essays are now considered foundational works in the theory and practice of translation. (See Caroline Alexander, "On Translating Homer's Iliad," Daedalus Spring 2016). These copies from the library of Arnold's near-contemporary, the Irish poet and critic Edward Dowden (1843-1913), whose ownership markings appear on both half-titles, and whose concise marginal notes appear throughout both volumes.

The work revolutionized the understanding of Homer in general, of the Homeric language and all following efforts to translate the Odyssey and the Iliad. "The best-known commentary on how the Homeric text should be translated was written by the Victorian poet and literary and social critic Matthew Arnold in 1861, with many subsequent editions and reprintings. "His lectures on translating Homer were the first adequate estimate, at least in English, of the literary qualities of the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" and did much to destroy the notion of a native genius or inspired folk-poet. Homer was now seen to be a conscious artist and took his place once and for all as the chief poet of antiquity, as Dante was of the Middle Ages and Shakespeare of modern times." In his book Arnold reviewed most of the existing English translations ? From this review and his own observations he extrapolated several rules for translating Homer. First, a translator should be "faithful" to the original, an ideal Arnold noted requires the translator to choose between producing a text so smooth that the reader does not realize it is a translation versus reproducing certain oddities of the original language to remind the reader of its origin. Second, a translator should seek to reproduce Homer's style and effect on the reader." (Young, The Printed Homer, 2008, p. 88). Matthew Arnold (1822 -1888) was a famous English poet and cultural critic, who worked as an inspector of schools. In 1857, he was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford and was the first in this position to deliver his lectures in English rather than in Latin. His first major achievement as Oxford-professor was his three lectures "On Translating Homer" that were published as they are here, in 1861. "[T]he most substantial fruits of his professorship were the three lectures "On Translating Homer" (1861)-in which he recommended Homer's plainness and nobility as medicine for the modern world, with its "sick hurry and divided aims" and condemned Francis Newman's recent translation as ignoble and eccentric." (Encycl. Britt.). The work had an enormous effect on Homer studies and on classical scholarship, translation-practice, and literary theory in general.

From the library o…f English poet John Drinkwater, with his book label to the front pastedown of Last Words and his ownership inscription in ink to the front free binder's blank, dated 1920. In 1923 Drinkwater published some correspondence of Arnold with fellow poet Robert Browning in the literary journal The Cornhill Magazine. Two works, octavo. The first work bound by Westleys in original green cloth, floral frame stamped in blind to covers, spine lettered in gilt, brown coated endpapers with advertisements to pastedowns. The second in original blue cloth, decorative frame stamped in blind to covers, spine lettered in gilt, black coated endpapers. Ownership inscription in pencil to front free endpaper of 1861 work and front free binder's blank of 1862 work. Spine sunned to the earlier work with light bumps to extremities, slight wear to spine ends; a very good copy. Spine lightly toned to later work, with slightly soiled boards and minimal wear to spine ends; still an excellent copy.
