This is a well-preserved 1772 printing of Éléments de la Philosophie de Newton (originally published 1738) Voltaire s accessible interpretation of Newtonian physics for a French-speaking, non-specialist audience. Blending science, philosophy, and subtle criticism of religious orthodoxy, it was a key vehicle for promoting rationalism and empirical thought in pre-Revolutionary Europe. Oeuvres de Monsieur De Voltaire (Monsieur de V***, from title page); Élémens de Philosophie de Newton, Divisés en Trois Parties. Nouvelle Édition. Published 'A. Neuchatel; (Switzerland), 1772. During this period, books designated as being from Neuchatel were either genuinely printed in Neuchâtel or issued under a pseudonymous imprint to disguise its true (often French) origin. Voltaire, though based at Ferney near Geneva, often arranged for his works to be printed in Neuchâtel because it lay outside French jurisdiction, offering protection from censorship; the local presses were both reliable and philosophically sympathetic; and the location allowed for discreet yet widespread dissemination of Enlightenment ideas across Europe. In this case, this book is almost certainly a genuine Swiss printing, most likely from the Fauche presses. Neuchâtel was a genuine publishing centre for Voltaire in the 1760s - 1770s. He maintained close ties with the Fauche brothers, who were key figures in publishing his Oeuvres complètes. A very good hardback bound in full contemporary speckled calf. With raised bands to spine with burgundy morocco label with gilt titles. Small library reference sticker near tail of spine. Covers with some wear, rubbing and bumping, and head and tail of spine worn at extremities, but overall in good shape for an 18th Century binding. Soundly bound. The spine is rather rubbed and gilt tooled decoration is quite worn. Endpapers with previous owner's name 'Anthony Murray'. Marbled endpapers. Text is bright and clean throughout with minimal wear. With red toned text block edges. With illustrations within the text. A complete and desirable example of an important early work in popularising Newton s natural philosophy, and an uncommon imprint. The ninth volume of the first collected edition of Rousseau's works to be published by Rey (17621764), and printed the same year as the first edition, using a reprinted title-page conjugate with the half-title present here, and without the errata leaf. In 1762, the same year that the Contrat social and Émile were published, the Small Council of Geneva condemned Rousseau. In 1763 Rousseau dramatically relinquished his rights and citizenship of Geneva, thus dividing the city politically between the aristocratic and the popular parties. A group of Genevan citizens forming part of the latter party challenged the legality of the Small Council's condemnation, and demanded that the case be referred to the General Council of burghers. The defence of the Small Council's power of veto over the burghers' wishes was put forward by Jean-Robert Tronchin in 1763, in his Lettres de la campagne, to which Rousseau's Lettres de la montagne is the direct and lively rejoinder.'The second part of them may interest the student of political history by its account of the little republic. We seem to be reading over again the history of a Greek city; the growth of a wealthy class in face of an increasing number of poor burgesses, the imposition of burdens in unfair proportions upon [them], the gradual usurpation of legislative and administrative function (including especially the judicial) by the oligarchs, and the twisting of democratic machinery to oligarchic ends the Four Hundred at Athens would have treated any Social Contract that should have appeared in their day, just as sternly as the Two Hundred or the Twenty-five treated the Social Contract that did appear, and for just the same reasons' (Morley). The result of all this legal fomentation was 'a more concrete presentation of democratic ideas than the Contrat Social based on a close reading of the lawbooks and histories of Geneva, which Rousseau now for the first time digested in his Neuchâtel retreat' (Palmer, The age of the democratic revolution (1959), p.131). With a long dedication (8 lines) from the author "á Mademoiselle Agnete With", signed and dated by the author "René Morax/ Morges. 1921". The book is bound by the recipient, the respected Danish bookbinder Agnete With (1899-1972) and signed in blind on inside backcover. 168,(2) pp. First edition. Arthur Honegger composed the music to Morax's play and the music became his break-through as a composer."Arthur Honegger was commissioned to write incidental music to accompany René Morax?s play Le Roi David in 1921. Honegger was given the nearly impossible deadline of 2 months to complete the work and was rewarded with much acclaim at the premiere. In 1923 he combined Morax?s narrative with his music and created a "symphonic psalm," the form that is familiar today, and titled his work Le Roi David."(Wikipedia).
