The "Massachusetts Farmer" calls for the secession of the original states from "the illegitimate states beyond the Allegheny Mountains and Louisiana." An act of preservation, succession will prevent a nation too large and diverse to govern. Several sources, such as Sabin, attribute this pamphlet to Lowell.
