In over two dozen series, he has explored and defined the boundaries of the medium of photography like no other contemporary artist. The catalog focuses particularly on four series from Thomas Ruff's oeuvre: the "Sterne" series, created between 1989 and 1992, the "zycles" series from 2007, the "cassini" series from 2008/2009, and current works from the "ma.r.s." series. Since 1989, Thomas Ruff has put aside his own photographic production in favor of working with existing material. The exploration of structural and content-related issues of the medium is at the heart of his work. The source material for all of the photographs shown was scientific imagery, some of which is freely available online.
