The excellent collection of "Themes" for students use, the "Manual" and Appendix thereto are entirely absent from the edition now extant, which therefore can scarcely be said to fairly represent the Logerian method, while it is apt to create a wrong impression on those who have been partly prejudiced by false statements, caused by jealousy against Logier's easy and progressive plan" Signed David Cope, Professor of Music, Melbourne & Sydney, Australia. Logier was descended from a French family who fled to Germany during the reign of Louis XIV. He settled in England in 1790 and in about 1814 began manufacturing variou…s inventions for teaching music. The work is comprised in three distinct branches: "the art of playing on the pianoforte (in the elementary part of which is employed the chiroplast); -- harmony and composition; -- and the peculiar method by which the instruction is conveyed to pupils." Until publication of his System, Logier had kept his secrets largely confined to those who paid handsomely for private instruction. The German translation is said to have been the textbook used by Richard Wagner, but Kassler thinks it is more likely to have been Logier's Thorough bass. Aside from some negligible abrasions and trivial wear to the corners, this is in remarkably fine and fresh original state. Kassler, Science of music in Britain, pp. 714-20.
