Hardcover. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 479pp, xviii. Illustrations. Very good. Lacks dust jacket. Tight and nice first edition of this dual biography of FDR and the man behind the scenes who "made" him. From the collection of Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate, and after him his son Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois -- and extra-illustrated as well, tipped in after the front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Howe, 1p, 5½" X 8¼", Washington, DC, 31 March 1933. Addressed to H.J. Fixmer. Fair only. Soiled and edgeworn. On "The White House" letterhead, Howe tells this Chicagoan "The President appreciated your kindness in sending your suggestion and asked me to forward your letter to the Secretary of the Treasury who, no doubt, will be very glad to have your viewpoint also." Boldly signed in full in blue ink. Franklin Roosevelt's long-time assistant Howe (1871-1936) was disliked at first by Eleanor for some of his earthier qualities but valued by FDR for his political savvy.
