Zustand: Very good. - A 7-1/4 inch high by 9-3/8 inch wide glossy black & white vintage photograph depicting Donald Woods in his role as Vicky's (Martha Vickers) manager Martin Drew standing in front of a poster pasted to a brick wall advertising the musical. The poster on the wall is illustrated with a photograph of Martha Vickers, the star of the production. The number "647-114" is printed in white along the bottom right of the image. Very good. This a vintage publicity photo, not a reproduction, sent out to newspapers and periodicals of the period. Text from a printed press release is tipped onto the verso. It reads: "(647-114). Rehearsals proceed with renewed vigor but still another obstacle is thrown in the boys' path. Drew and grandma return to find that Vicki is set to open in the musical. Drew, as Vicki's manager, threatens another restraining order if she sets foot on the stage.".

Rare British Indian propaganda poster 50x38cm, printed on economy paper featuring a b/w photo captioned in English and 6 local languages (Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi). Good, tanned with faint stain to lower left corner, folded, hole-punched for filing with no impact on content, with small tape repair to blank verso. This was probably issued by the Director of War Publicity, Madras, for the National War Front. Undated, but part of a series referencing the Burma Campaign (1942-45) in which many Indian soldiers were fighting. This poster supported the British Indian Government's comprehensive propaganda operation to keep the population onside. With India providing over 2 million troops and several million others to the war effort at home, it tied the war to the fate of India, praised Indian contributions, and countered Axis propaganda. It began in 1940 with Provincial and District War Committees coordinated from Calcutta, and continued with the National War Front (NWF) from 1942, under the Director of War Publicity at Victory House in Madras. The NWF operated through Directors at Presidency level supported by District and Divisional organisers, and an array of lecturers, propagandists, village leaders, and inspectors reaching deep into the grassroots. In support, Victory House published the weekly "Madras War Review", and served as a Central Information Bureau with a Showroom displaying its models for railway cars, charts, maps, posters, and other material, which were replicated in local NWF "Victory Houses" across India. Creasing, light soiling, a few small edge tears, not signed. Mark Twain and his family first visited Austria in 1891 and again in 1893. In late September of 1897, the Twain family returned to Austria and settled in Vienna, staying there for almost two years. On Oct. 28 of the same year, during a visit to the national Reichsrat (Imperial Council of Austria) Twain witnessed a brawl on its floor. The ruling Hapsburg family attemped to keep the Austro-Hungarian empire intact by replacing German as the language of Bohemia (which is now the major province of the Czech Republic) with Czech. This caused the German speaking members of the governing body to riot as they wanted the German language and culture to dominate. Twain felt that the Austrian government, in an effort to distract the citizens, stirred up anti-Semitic feelings, causing not only political but physical attacks upon the Jewish community of Vienna. During his stay in Vienna, Twain wrote and published several works including "The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg" and "The Mysterious Stranger Stories" that were set in Austria. Very nice artwork by Edward Penfield, not long before he left his job as art director of Harper's Magazine.

Zustand: Good. Gouache in 4 colors on board.66 x 48 cm. Witold Gordon was a Polish-born American Art Deco painter best known for his murals in Radio City Music Hall completed in 1932. He painted a 6,000 square foot mural for the 1939 New York World's Fair and a series of New Yorker covers depicting the city in its recent past. He also designed the poster for the original Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! .Gordon was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1885 and studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After he finished his studies, he moved to New York. He worked with Donald Deskey in the design of Radio City Music Hall where two of his murals are exhibited. He illustrated books, and designed the poster for the Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY in 1933. In 1939 he created a painting for the New York Worlds' Fair. He traveled throughout the South and produced a series of paintings with the name "American Scene" which was exhibited in 1941 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. During his travels he painted in Gouache storefronts and housefronts that he felt showed the true face of America. In 1934 he was commissioned by Conde Nast to paint a series of "New York Shops" (New York Shops you Never See) which were published in Vanity Fair Magazine in July of 1934. In 1932 when Georgia O'Keefe accepted the commission to paint a mural in the Ladies' Room in Radio City Music Hall and abandoned it at the advice of her husband, Alfred Steiglitz who said "Ms. O'Keefe does NOT do bathrooms!", Witold Gordon was given the commission and painted two murals for Deskey's masterpiece.Witold Gordon died in 1968.(1943)."Free men cannot start a war, but once it is started, they can fight on in defeat. John Steinbeck, The Moon Is Down.The Moon is Down was John Steinbeck's second attempt at writing a novel in play form (Of Mice and Men was his first). It was composed while on assignment from the Foreign Information Service, a division of the Office of Strategic Services charged with combating Nazi propaganda. His original story, depicting a small American town invaded by enemy troops, was rejected by the FIS, who feared that it might demoralize the civilian public. In his revised manuscript, published by Viking in 1942, Steinbeck kept the same plot but set it in an unnamed Scandinavian town rather than the United States. Despite mixed critical reception, the book was a remarkable public success, outselling The Grapes of Wrath two-to-one in pre-publication; it would eventually pass through 76 editions. Shortly after publication, the producer Oscar Serlin purchased the dramatic rights to The Moon is Down (Herman Shumlin initially bought them but passed them on, saying he "did not care for [The Moon is Down's] politics." Serlin, known for his production of "Life with Father," accepted the challenge, believing Steinbeck's play would attract a large audience. "The Moon is Down" premiered on Broadway in April 1942, starring Otto Kruger as Colonel Lanser and Ralph Morgan as Mayor Orden. Like the novel before it, the play was publicly adored but critically lambasted. Life magazine reported that it was "trumpeted louder than any literary event of the season," while the critical consensus was that "Steinbeck was too easy on the Germans, too optimistic about the ultimate victory of the Allies, [and ultimately] too moralistic." Despite its initial Broadway run lasting only nine weeks, the play was immensely successful on the road and abroad, especially in London and Stockholm. Rather surprisingly, it was nominated for Best Play by the New York Drama Critics' Circle and placed second.Provenance: From the estate of producer Oscar Serlin.

1st Edition, 1st Printing. Colour Chinese propaganda poster commemorating the great victory won against Japanese invaders during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The poster reproduces the Chinese ink painting by the Shandong Province born artist Chen Quansheng in 1977. It depicts an army nurse, wearing an armband of "Eighth Route Army" reading the latest war report to the women and children who are washing clothes by the creek. A block of handwritten text in calligraphy style printed upper left corner with the artist's name and chop states the painting is dedicated to commemorate the mutual effort made by soldiers and civilians at ???????? "Mount Yimeng Revolutionary Base" during the war against Japan. A chop lower right corner reads ???? "Under the Mount Yimeng". Very light foxing and occasional creases and small tears on edges, otherwise good. Text in Chinese. Sheet measures 53 x 76.9cm.
