With individual and comprehensive information about buildings of all periods and their decoration, in every parish of each county. Edited by Sir John Betjeman, an English poet, writer, and broadcaster, and his close friend John Egerton Christmas Piper, an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets. Betjeman was a passionate defender of Victorian architecture, helping to save St Pancras railway station from demolition. This set contains: Murray's Buckinghamshire Architectural Guide, 1948. With one hundred and sixty-six photographs and a folding map. Collated complete. Murray's Berkshire Architectural Guide, 1949. First edition. 4to. xii, 132 pp. Publisher's red cloth, lettered and illustrated in black and white to the spine and upper cover, illustrated dust jacket incorporating some of the same design within the same format as other titles in the same series, signed by Piper on the title page. Numerous black and white photographic illustrations plus a folding colour map. Edge wear and tear to the jacket with a loss at the juncture of the head of the spine and the rear panel, else very good.

Original dust jacket. Slight bumping to head and foot of spine; slight chipping to head of dust jacket. Internally very good; overall in very good condition. Inscription reads "Kay Francis from John Betjeman 1957", surrounded with decorative flourishes. The last of Betjeman and Piper's British travel guides to be published by Betjeman's own publisher, John Murray. The friends collaborated on a series of these guides from 1934 through to the 1960s, with a hiatus during World War II. In 1968 Betjeman quarrelled with the publishers over some derogatory remarks he wrote in the Northamptonshire guide and resigned.
