Robert Hardwicke. c1873. ~ The public health reformer, natural historian, lecturer and skilled microscopist Edwin Lankester (1814-1874) first published his Half-hours with the Microscope in 1859. This immensely popular book went through numerous editions and was still published decades after the author's death. Described as 'a popular guide', the book was framed as a series of half-hour adventures with the microscope in the home, garden and further afield, and points to the developing role of the microscope within the family home and life in the 19th century. It was illustrated 'from nature' by Tuffen West, one of the most skilled and prolific illustrators of microscopical observations of the period. The idea of the microscope as 'a means of amusement and instruction', appearing here in the sub-title, was expressed in much of the literature on microscopy produced at this time.

The third edition of Half-Hours with the Microscope, a popular handbook on microbiology, written by English surgeon and naturalist Edwin Lankester. Believed to be publi…shed in 1861, first published in 1859. In the publisher's original cloth with blind stamp detail. Contains a colour frontispiece, and all seven other colour plates by British engraver Tuffen West. Collated complete. Teaching beginners the principles behind microscopes and cell biology, Lankester was the first Medical Officer for Health and made major contributions to controlling London's occurent cholera outbreaks. This third edition contains updated information, particularly concerning compound microscopes, and new in-text woodcut illustrations. In the publisher's original cloth with blind stamp detail. Externally, the odd small mark to boards, with slight rubbing to joints and edges. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, with minor loss to spine head and tail. Brown end papers are clean with minor grazing of sticker to bottom edge of rear pastedown. Minor wear to rear end paper hinge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are mostly bright and clean with minor age toning and a small mark to p.9. Very Good. Tuffen West (illustrator). book.
