In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Near Fine. Not Stated (illustrator). John Phillips' condensed history of canals in England, looking at their usage for travel and and trade purposes. John Phillips is thought to be the first person to document and research British Canals, writing this detailed book as a result. Writing at the time of the industrial revolution in England, Phillips" enthusiasm and passion for the subject is clear on the page. Phillips" was a great surveyor of canals, and his works were widely read and published by his peers. Phillips thought that canals provided a method of easy and secure communication to other parts of the country. "General History of Inland Navigation" looks at how the canals in England are used, and how they could be used for trade and communication purposes. Phillips considers distances, timing, and prices. With a colour-coded fold-out map in a pocket to the rear pastedown. The map has some edgewear, and minor tears to fold, however doesn"t affect the image. Four plates to the rear; "Lock for a Canal", "Aqueduct for a Canal", "Bridge for a Canal", "Accommodation Bridge for a Canal". Collated, complete. With two tables to the rear; "A Table of Canals in England", documenting the length, rise, and fall of canals in England, and "Difference of Prices of Carriage of Goods by Canal and Land". Binders stamp to the verso of the front endpaper, "Bound by Frost & . Baym, England". In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally smart. Light marking to the leather of the boards and spine. Very light fading to the top of the leather to the rear board, and to the top of the spine. Light rubbing to the raised bands. Binders stamp to the verso of the front endpaper, "Bound by Frost & . Baym, England". Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some age-toning to the edges. Pages are generally clean with the odd handling mark and odd spot. Near Fine. book.
