Various pencil writing on front pasted down endpaper. Mild staining to a 2-3 inch area on fore-edge for first approximately 80 pages. Pages otherwise clean and unmarked, free of foxing. Stillé studied at UPenn's medical school, and studied anatomy under William Wood Gerhard and Caspar Wistar Pennock at Philadelphia Hospital. He also studied in Paris from 1836-39, in an effort to make up for the shortcomings in American medical education of the day. He was a leader in the formation of the American Medical Association and an influential physician of his day. This is the first edition of one of numerous works he published over the course of his long career, a volume that dovetailed with his work as Lecturer of Pathology to the Philadelphia Association for Medical Instruction. Contemporary speckled calf (upper edge rubbed, imperceptible repairs to spine), spine ruled in gilt, red morocco label. Faint signature dated 1830 at top of title. FIRST EDITION. Parry's classic account of exophthalmic goitre appears first in this book as a brief report; it was fully given in the Collections from the unpublished writings, 1825. This book also contains the first description of reactive hyperaemia. It was intended as a large work, comprising Parry's carefully kept records from many years? observations in practice, but no more of this edition was published, and even in the second, posthumous, edition, the second volume appeared only as a fragment. Parry was a respected physician with extensive and distinguished social connections, and his independent researches are of considerable importance. Few physicians of his time enjoyed or deserved a higher reputation. Parry was a friend of Edward Jenner, and the dedicatee of Jenner?s Inquiry (1798). …
