Paperback. Zustand: Good. The world learned the horrendous details of Martin and Gracia Burnham's yearlong captivity in Gracia's book, In the Presence of My Enemies. To Fly Again, Gracia's reflections on the lessons and spiritual truths she learned in the jungle, contains 21 brief, theme-based chapters that squarely address the challenges each of us face when we lose control of some aspect of life. This book offers no pat answers or easy solutions, just the battle-tested wisdom of a woman who lived her greatest nightmare and came through it more convinced of God's grace than ever before. Even those unfamiliar with her dramatic story will be engaged by Gracia's insights on surviving life's unexpected crises.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. This ample selection of articles and essays by one of America's most popular writers about fly-fishing begins with a moment on Michigan's Au Sable River--the exact moment when the author lost his heart to fly-fishing. This collection chronicles a fishing life punctuated by a revealing trip with one of his grown sons and mellow reflections from a hospital bed. This is the broadest of Nick Lyons's books, with sections on tarpon and pike fishing in the Marquesas and in France, bass bugging on a small Connecticut pond, and trout fishing on unnamed creeks and blue-ribbon western rivers, as well as reflections on such aspects of the sport as the flies that are the underpinning of it all, the pursuit of records, the odd characters he's met along the way, and the increasing challenge of crowds who pursue this ever-popular sport. By turns canny, hilarious, inquiring, and philosophic, A Flyfisher's World is an impressive addition to Nick Lyons's important body of writing about fly-fishing.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Soaring Through Turbulent Times Lessons from a female pioneer who embraced challenges from up above When Barbara Bell was a child in the sixties, she often dreamed she was flying. In a deep sleep, she would soar through the rolling hills, with arms outstretched, as her body accelerated through the air. Many of these dreamy nights were spent gliding through the same cloud formations that she observed from her family's backyard in small-town Michigan. These dreams eventually transformed into reality when she went on to build a distinguished career as an aviator and naval flight test officer. In Flight Lessons, Bell shares the unexpected turbulence she encountered while navigating thirty-five different types of US and allied aircraft, tallying over sixteen hundred hours of flight time. Her perseverance to push past the limits that were often placed on her as a woman in the military is what defines her today and gives her a platform to stand on when mentoring and the next generation of women. Sprinkled with compelling personal anecdotes, Flight Lessons showcases Bell's trailblazing years of service and gives perspective on what women can accomplish with persistence and knowledge. With a narrative that is drenched in female empowerment, Flight Lessons chronicles an extraordinary journey of inspiration, thanks to Bell's belief in tackling challenges from a higher perspective.…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Life is more like a marathon than a sprint. Here's how to stay well conditioned.Bill Butterworth will make you laugh-and learn while you're doing it In the opening chapter of this powerful little book, Bill shares with you how, while running his rotund body in a nightmarish 440-yard dash, he learned a great lesson: Life is much more like a marathon than a sprint. The attitudes and actions that result in steady success over the long haul are what make for long-term satisfaction and achievement. To experience this for yourself, you need to understand how to deal with life's inevitable challenges: -The Hazies-losing sight of long-term goals-The Lazies-lacking the self-discipline to bring life back into focus-The Crazies-allowing life to run out of control Each of these can be conquered by three clarifying triangles: setting clear priorities, learning the discipline of endurance, and reaching the finish line through skillful pacing. It all adds up to a succinct and inspiring guide to balancing excellence at work with fulfillment in all of life. Also look for the On-the-Fly-Guide to Building Successful Teams.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Reality, as Eileen Robertson Hamra perceived it, instantaneously altered the moment authorities confirmed that the plane her husband was piloting had crashed, and he had not survived. In the process of mourning her loss, with three young children in tow, where Eileen wandered and landed was nothing short of miraculous. Between the valleys of grief and the peaks of hope, she discovered that keeping promises to the dead is a lifelong act, and honoring one love does not mean foregoing the freedom and joy that is found in reopening your heart, trusting in new love, and expanding your definition of family. Three days before Christmas 2011 and just two miles from her parents' home, Eileen Roberston Hamra's husband, Brian, died alone, flying his own airplane. Overnight, Eileen lost the man she loved, and her three young children lost their father. Brian's parents lost their son, his younger sister lost her big brother, and hundreds of people working across the globe in the tech and solar energy industries lost their mentor, their leader, their guide. Al Gore sent his condolences. After holding bicoastal celebrations of Brian's life, for weeks, months, a year, Eileen and her children wrapped themselves in his clothing, and cocooned. Each night, under the balmy black-blue skies of Southern California, they cried, hugged, and pressed forward in ways they knew Brian would have wanted them to. Through the rollercoaster ride of loss and mourning, they were buoyed by friends, teachers, strangers, angels, and of course, family. Despite the dark sense of having been gutted, in fact because of the shadowy pangs of emptiness she experienced, Eileen learned new ways in which to shine a light and make her way toward feeling whole again. She transformed longing and loneliness into wisdom and wonder. She became more patient, compassionate, balanced, joyful, and loving than she had ever thought possible. Time to Fly is the story of how one woman chose to view the tragedy of her husband's death as an opportunity to strengthen the bond with her children, and to wake up to her life's purpose. It is one woman's high-flying and turbulent journey to taking full possession of her potential by breaking beyond what she thought she would, should, and could do. Eileen Robertson Hamra moved through grief toward healing via a tough and magical spiritual awakening. Making a series of conscious choices and paying attention to a string of coincidences and otherworldly signs, she eventually met another wonderful man, Mike. They fell in love, got married, and set a well-respected IVF clinic record by giving birth to a miracle child when Eileen was forty-six years old. Time to Fly is a memoir not only for the bereaved and those who support them, but for anyone who believes in the power of finding the silver lining in the darkest of situations and holding on to that sliver of light, in order to turn things around. We do not have complete control over our limited time on this remarkable planet, and so in the time we do have, we must hold one another, build softness alongside resilience, and write our own flight plan.…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Born in 1913 in Collinsville, Illinois, Cecil Reed has lived all of his life in the Midwest as a black man among whites. This self-styled fly in the buttermilk worked among whites with such skill and grace that they were barely aware of his existence - unless he wanted to get a bank loan or move into their neighborhood. Now, in his lively and optimistic autobiography, he speaks of his resilience throughout a life spent working peacefully but passionately for equality. As a teenager and young man, Cecil Reed was the black waiter, the short-order cook, the paper carrier, the tap dancer and singer, the carpenter, and the maintenance man who learned to survive in a white society. As an adult in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he inched his way into owning several small businesses, convincing the community to accept him and his family through hard work and creativity. When whites felt besieged by black militants in the sixties, they turned to him for less threatening advice and leadership. Reed put away his floor sander and became an inspiring speaker who crisscrossed the country offering solutions to civil rights problems. In 1966, Reed was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives, the first and only black Republican to hold this office. His next major triumph: securing a unanimous vote of approval for the state's fair housing bill. Within a year he was appointed by a Democratic governor to the Iowa Employment Security Commission, becoming the first black commissioner in America. Thus began a twenty-year career in public service in both state and federal positions that brought him into partnership with the nation's political, economic, and religious leaders. Throughout his sometimes tragic butalways hope-filled life, from shoeshine stand to Department of Labor, Cecil Reed has been a quiet, persistent, realistically-within-the-system fighter for justice. Although he epitomizes the success of his get along by getting along philosophy, he still confronts racism daily, still feels in harm's way, still works for equal rights for all. Every reader will appreciate his honest, energizing, pragmatic chronicle of a life before and after the Civil Rights Act.…
