Checkley (1680-1754), a Boston native educated at the Latin School, opened a shop selling "books, medicines, and small merchandise" (DAB) in the 1710s and gain notoriety in the 1720s with the publ…ication of a number of controversial pamphlets; he eventually took orders and served King's Church in Providence, Rhode Island, as Rector for a decade. Cf. Sabin 12361-12365 for the original editions of Checkley's writings. Ex-historical society library, with bookplate on pastedowns, an small paper labels on spines, else a very good copy. Contemporary brown three-quarter roan (rubbed, especially at joints, edges bumped), gilt, and marbled boards and endpapers, gilt title and rules between raised bands on spine, t.e.g., original printed wrappers bound in.
