Paperback. Zustand: Good. In 1824, a group of prominent Hartford businessmen formed the Connecticut River Company to construct a canal that would bypass the treacherous rapids of Enfield Falls and extend navigation along the Connecticut River. Soon boats were a frequent sight in the village of Windsor Locks, named after the locks of the canal that ran alongside Main Street. Mills also sprang up in the area, utilizing the canal s water to power their manufacturing operations. Today the canal has taken on a more historical, ecological, and recreational significance. Home to diverse plant and animal species, it is an excellent place to enjoy sweeping views of the Connecticut River and to see the factories that played a big part in the region s history.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Here, in stunning images and stirring narrative, is the history of Watertown, a community that lies near the center of western Connecticut. The town was once part of Mattatuck, a tract of land purchased from the Paugasett Indians in 1684. The fertile area first attracted Farmington residents, who settled down to farm the land. It was not until 1722, however, that the first sawmill was built. In time, new settlers joined the earlier families and, by 1739, they formed the parish of Westbury, which in turn was incorporated as Watertown in 1780. With more than two hundred unforgettable pictures, Watertown highlights the local men and women, buildings and churches, and neighborhoods and businesses that are the essential element of the town's lively history. It shows some of the nine one-room schoolhouses that children attended. It features the Taft School, a preparatory school for boys opened by Horace Taft in 1893; Mrs. Parke and her strange museum; and tavern keeper and farmer James Bishop. It proudly displays some of the firsts for Watertown: Merrit Heminway winding thread on spools, Wheeler-Wilson developing the lock-stitch sewing machine, and the Watertown Manufacturing Company designing and producing Lifetime Ware.…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Once part of Farmington, Southington began as an agricultural community dotted with family farms. Like other towns along the Quinnipiac River, it developed a healthy industrial economy once entrepreneurs discovered that the river and other waterways could be harnessed for manufacturing purposes. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the factories multiplied in size and number. This growth sparked a need for a labor force that was readily supplied by an influx of German and, later, Italian and Polish immigrants. These mills are now gone, yet the history lives on. Relics of the cement industry can still be seen on Andrews Street, and Center Street still provides opportunities to shop and dine. Lake Compounce remains a place of fun and amusement, and Roger s Orchard still flourishes and is now the largest apple producer in the state.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Hamden is nicknamed the Land of the Sleeping Giant after the series of hills within its bounds that resemble a recumbent giant. But Hamden is much more than the resting place of the legendary Hobbomock. The town's history is illustrated here in Hamden, which contains photographs dating from the 1840s through the late 1900s. These vintage images depict the contours of community life in Hamden. The collection highlights famous residents, including Eli Whitney and Thornton Wilder; local eccentrics, including the wandering Leatherman and William Beamish, a female printer who lived as a man; changes in the land from forest to farmland to suburbia; businesses, institutions, civic organizations, and churches; and people at play-from skaters on Lake Whitney to hikers on the Sleeping Giant.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Bristol, originally known as West Woods, formed later than other Colonial towns. Bristol s mother town of Farmington was settled in 1640 and became a town in 1645, but pioneers did not lay out the remote and unpopulated section of Farmington until 1721. The Jerome, Matthews, and Lewis families created the New Cambridge Parish in 1742, and it was this parish that separated from Farmington and finally formed the town of Bristol in 1785. In Bristol Historic Homes, readers will meet these families and other important figures, such as Ebenezer Barns. Barns built the first permanent home in 1728, and this structure later became a tavern and community center. Through wonderfully preserved vintage photographs, this volume shows how an agricultural community grew and prospered as a variety of skilled tradesmen brought hard work and vision to this beautiful area. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. In 1639, the Reverend Adam Blakeman and his small congregation settled on the north shore of Long Island Sound at a spot known to the Native American tribes who spent their summers there as Cupheag. Over the past 360 years, the town has experienced tremendous growth and progress. Although Stratford covers only 19 square miles, the town is home to over 50,000 residents. Before the 20th-century manufacturing boom, the lifestyles of Stratford citizens centered on river and shoreline activities and agriculture. With the development of next-door Bridgeport (once part of Stratford) as an industrial center in the late 19th century, Stratford became a suburban recreation area; as large farms were divided into small house lots, individual property owners moved in and housing developments sprang up throughout.…
