Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Once part of Farmington, Southington began as an agricultural community dotted with family farms. Like other towns along the Quinnipiac River, it developed a healthy industrial economy once entrepreneurs discovered that the river and other waterways could be harnessed for manufacturing purposes. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the factories multiplied in size and number. This growth sparked a need for a labor force that was readily supplied by an influx of German and, later, Italian and Polish immigrants. These mills are now gone, yet the history lives on. Relics of the cement industry can still be seen on Andrews Street, and Center Street still provides opportunities to shop and dine. Lake Compounce remains a place of fun and amusement, and Roger s Orchard still flourishes and is now the largest apple producer in the state.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - With the outbreak of World War I, industry in Southington--previously an agrarian community--grew in both size and profit. The citizens of Southington banded together to help in the war effort by joining the American Red Cross and Home Guard and selling Liberty Bonds. Industrial growth continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Though few factories closed, most were forced to reduce their workforce and hours of production. By the end of the 1930s, the nation was preparing for a war most people hoped would never happen. Factories rehired former employees and created new job opportunities, and four months after Pearl Harbor, Southington's 17 factories were working around the clock to produce wartime goods. Two World Wars and the Great Depression left their mark on citizens, creating changes that remain today.…
