Plates, 10, no's 1 - 9 are at the rear, no. 10 is opposite p.491. There is also an engraved portrait frontispiece of the author. Most of the plates are offset. All edges speckled red, the contents are occasionally very lightly spotted. Ink signature of C.E. Branfill at the head of the title page. Later nineteenth century half calf over marbled paper backed boards, sometime new endpapers. Overall, a near fine copy. Sir John Sinclair (1754 - 1835) was born at Caithness, in the north of Scotland. He studied at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Oxford. He was created a baronet in 1786, and was the founder of the Board of Trade. For more details of Sinclair see - Inglis and Palgrave, Dictionary of Political Economy. Vol, III, p, 402/403. The ink signature of C. E. Branfill in ink at the head of the titlepage, is probably that of Champion Edward Branfill [IV] (1789-1844) was one of the Branfills at Upminster Hall, Essex.Champion Edward Branfill IV was a colourful and controversial figure, to say the least !; and was a liberal at a time when almost all other farmers were Tory. Includes frontispiece portrait and seven full page illustrated plates. (Shaw and Shoemaker, 45720) Signed on the front free endpaper and title page by Levi Lincoln, Jr. Levi Lincoln Jr. (1782-1868) was an American politician who served as the 13th Governor of Massachusetts from 1825 to 1834. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he was the son of Levi Lincoln Sr., a prominent political figure who served as Attorney General under President Thomas Jefferson. Lincoln Jr. graduated from Harvard College in 1802, studied law, and established a successful legal practice. A member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate. In addition to his tenure as governor, Lincoln Jr. was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and later served as the first Mayor of Worcester, contributing significantly to the development of the city.
