Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Large accordion-style book measuring 6½ by 16 by 3½ inches. Double paper pages pasted together in red and gilt covers and all edges gilt. Neatly written in Burmese script with black ink throughout. Light wear to the covers, some occasional light dampstaining, and one leaf with damage to the center affecting a portion of four lines of text. This has been stabilized with archival tissue. Otherwise this is a very good copy. We are told that this is the Story of King Narin. Palm leaf. Complete with 16 leaves (13 cm x 59 cm) of text in Pali, written in Burmese "square" script. The leaves consist of cloth, the fabric of discarded monk's robes, which has been lacquered to provide a rigid surface. (Copper is also used and more rarely ivory). The lacquered surface is gilded and the design is painted in red lacquer and finally the script applied in black laquer. Within wooden covers, similarly gilded and decorated, bevelled edges. A beautiful copy. The Kammavaca is a collection of extracts from the Pali Vinaya, the monastic code of discipline, outlining rituals and observances of the Buddhistic order. It was customary for a Burmese family to commission a copy of the Kammavaca on the occasion of their son entering the monkhood. This kind of manuscript was produced at Mandalay in the latter half of the 19th century. John Guy, "Palm-leaf and Paper. Illustrated Manuscripts of India and Southeast Asia", no. 37. p.61.
n/a. Zustand: Very Good. A rectangular wooden manuscript case (sadaik) from Burma, consisting of a main lower section supported by four extended feet, an arched top lid and a removable interior tray. The exterior is ornately decorated overall with inscribed figures and foliage in red and green lacquer, all on a black lacquer background. Decorative elements are highly stylized and cover virtually the entire visible surface of the case. The lid itself depicts five enclosures (probably meditative cells) each occupied by a single figure; to the exterior right of each cell is a dancing figure, five in all. Each long side of the box displays another five enclosures, this time unoccupied, with four dancing figures interspersed between the cells. The ends each similarly portray two unoccupied cells with a single dancing figure between them. The top of the inner tray is dramatically decorated with two stylized opposing elephants, each within a black lacquer cartouche. All other interior surfaces are decorated in plain red lacquer, the base in simple black lacquer. The case dates to the first half of the 20th century and would typically have been used to house and protect a Buddhist manuscript, either a sutra on lontar palm or a Buddhist initiation manuscript (kammavaca). There are minor chips and scratches commensurate with its age and use; overall the case is in very good, sound condition. The case dimensions are 64 cm. x 23 cm. x 26 cm. high. Size: 64 cm. x 23 cm. x 26 cm.
n/a. Zustand: Very Good. A rectangular footed wooden manuscript case (sadaik) from Burma, constructed in three sections, providing two separate compartments for manuscript storage. The exterior of the case is richly decorated overall with inscribed scenes outlined in red, orange, green and yellow lacquer over a black lacquer background. Unusually, the box bears seven inscriptions in stylized Burmese script, which provides much information on the dating of the box (1855), the donors' names (Daw Mae Ngwe and U Sein of Hman Kyo, Pagan City) and the scenes depicted on the box. These are as follows: for the top panel, the left side portrays King Ajatashatru consulting with his ministers regarding where he should seek repentance for his wicked deeds. To the left of center, the King is kneeling before Venerable Kasyapa, surrounded by attendant Bhikkhus, apparently expressing remorse. A single robed figure to the far right, Ven. Ananda, sits in meditation, seeking the Dharma. Around all four sides of the case there are processions of figures in courtly dress, all culminating in the center of one long side, where a single central figure, the Brahmin Dona, sits on an ornate platform facing a naga dragon. According to the inscription above him, Dona is in the process of distributing the Buddha's relics. The interior surfaces of the three sections are covered in plain red lacquer; the base in black lacquer. The case would typically have been used to house and protect a Buddhist manuscript, either a sutra on lontar palm or a Buddhist initiation manuscript (kammavaca). There are minor chips and scratches commensurate with its age and use; overall the case is in very good, sound condition. The case dimensions are 67 cm. x 21.3 cm. x 22 cm. high. Size: 67 cm. x 21.3 cm. x 22 cm.
