Buch. Neuware - In 1929, ten years after the Bauhaus was founded, Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau launched the exhibition 'New Typography.' László Moholy-Nagy, who had left Dessau the previous year and had earned a reputation as a designer in Berlin, was invited to exhibit his work together with other artists. He designed a room-entitled 'Wohin geht die typografische Entwicklung ' ('Where is typography headed ')-where he presented 78 wall charts illustrating the development of the 'New Typography' since the turn of the century and extrapolating its possible future. To create these charts, he not only used his own designs, but also included advertising prints by colleagues associated with the Bauhaus.The functional graphic design, initiated by the 'New Typography' movement in the 1920s, broke with tradition and established a new advertising design based on artistic criteria. An exceptionally nice copy in the lightly rubbed and marked dust jacket, somewhat tanned at the spine. First English language edition, first impression, of this masterpiece of European fantasy fiction, from the German original first published in book form in 1915 by Kurt Wolff, Leipzig. Meyrink is considered "perhaps the foremost modern writer of supernatural novels. who used the subject matter of contemporary occultism in a highly individual, metaphysical way" (Bleiler). In 1928 Gollancz commissioned E. McKnight Kauffer, the fashionable modernist graphic designer, to design his new logo and a series of pictorial dust jackets for 18 titles he published that year. Kauffer's designs have been much admired, but Gollancz ultimately decided that the expense was unnecessary. He switched to a more economical design of bright yellow jackets enlivened with startling typography in magenta and black, though for decades after the firm still used the VG logo that Kauffer had designed for him.Any of the Kauffer pictorial jackets for Gollancz are scarce in commerce and much sought-after. This work contains eight full-page lithographs and two small vignette by Marion V. Dorn. Vathek is an early example of a Gothic novel by the British writer William Beckford (1760-1844). The lead character, caliph Vathek, goes on several adventures to gain supernatural powers. Instead of obtaining these powers, Vathek is doomed to live in hell for eternity. On these quests he meets eerie individuals and travels to fantastical places. This work is a beautiful example of the oriental influence in the 19th century. The illustrations are made by the American illustrator and textile designer Marion Victoria Dorn (1896-1964). These expressive and rather modern illustrations are the only pictures by her that were published as book illustrations. "Playing a pivotal role in the development of the illustrated Haggadah was Gershom ben Solomon ha-Kohen's Haggadah, published in Prague in 1526. Typography of this Haggadah - which alternates small and large letters, and contains inverted letters at the end of many lines - was a common feature of texts produced by scribes and preserved the look of manuscript Haggadahs. Kohen's Haggadah included sixty woodcut illustrations and played a critical role in establishing the iconographic genres among Haggadahs well into the twentieth century. One example is the four woodcuts on the pages describing the famed 'four sons. ' Not only are all the sons clothed in Renaissance fashion, but more importantly the 'wicked son' is depicted as a traditional soldier of the period. While his uniform would change to fit current fashions, the wicked son appeared for many centuries in the form of a soldier, thus linking wickedness with war for the Jewish people in the early modern and modern periods. In addition, one can see several pages later a pictorial rendition of Pharaoh in a tub, a theme which is present in Haggadahs well into the twentieth century. Drawing on the rabbinic legend that Pharaoh bathed in a tub filled with the blood of Jewish children in order to cure himself of a disease, the Prague Haggadah offers a pictorial tradition which enabled all participants at the seder table to appreciate rabbinic interpretations and tradition. Some covers show Perry's "Black Ships" in Tokyo bay, Perry's fleet of seven "Black Ships" and the launch bringing Perry to Japan's shore. Another shows "UNITED STATES-JAPAN" and the flags of each nation, with an Uncle Sam flag-decorated top hat. Anth- er shows a younger Perry, with his Flag Ship & small launch bringing him to Japan's shores, with cartouche. Each is very clean, without flaw, enclosed in a glassine envelope. A nice addition to any Perry or early Japan collection. Suitable for display or framing. Nice typography. Born April 10, 1794, in South Kingston, Rhode Island, the brother of Oliver Hazard Perry, he bgean his naval career as midshipman at the age of 15. He advanced to lieutenant in 1813 and to commander in 1826. He supervi- sed the construction of the first naval steamship, the Fulton, and upon its completion in 1837, he took command with the rank of captain. He was promoted to commodore in 1842. In 1846-47 he commanded the Gulf squadron during the Mexican War. In 1853, Perry was sent to Japan, a country that had been closed to outsiders since the 17th century. On July 8, he led a squadron of four ships into Tokyo Bay and presented representatives of the Emperor with the texst of a proposed commercial and friendship treaty. To give the relulctant Japanese court time to consider the offer, he then sailed for China. With an even more powerful fleet, he returned to Japan in February 1854. The treaty, signed on March 31, 1854 provided that humane treatment be extended to sailors shipwerecked in Japanese territory, that U.S. ships be permitted to buy coal in Japan, and that the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate be opened to U.S. commerce. Perry's mission ended Japan's 400 years of self-imposed iso- lation, a prerequisite for its subsequent development into a modern nation. Perry died in New York City on March 4, 1858.
