Après des essais expérimentaux d'aérodynamique obtenus par chute libre du deuxième étage de la tour qu'il avait édifiée sur le Champ de Mars à Paris, Gustave Eiffel fit construire à cet endroit une soufflerie en 1909. Elle était constituée d'une veine d'essais de 3 mètres de diamètre sur une longueur de 2,5 mètres. L'écoulement, engendré par une hélice entraînée par un moteur de 70cv, pouvait varier entre 5 et 20 mètres par seconde. L'installation était enfermée dans un hangar de 240 mètres carrés pour ne pas subir l'influence du vent extérieur. Cette installation servit, notamment, aux essais des profils d'ailes Eiffel qui équiperont un grand nombre d'avions français de la Première Guerre Mondiale. Elle fut déplacée à Auteuil en 1912 et est toujours en activité aujourd'hui, exploitée par la société Aérodynamique Eiffel. After experimental aerodynamic tests obtained by free fall from the second floor of the tower he had built on the Champ de Mars in Paris, Gustave Eiffel had a wind tunnel built there in 1909. Adquirió gran fama por el atrevido diseño metálico de varios puentes para la red francesa de ferrocarriles, de los cuales es especialmente notable el viaducto de Garabit. Edition originale et unique ornée de deux planches photographiques à pleine page: le monument lui-même, au pied de la tour Eiffel et un détail du buste. Ce buste d'Eiffel en bronze doré a été sculpté par Antoine Bourdelle. Réalisé vers 1900, il a été érigé en 1929 à l'initiative du général Ferrié sur une stèle conçue par Auguste Perret et André Granet. L'inauguration du monument eut lieu le 2 mai 1929 en présence de la famille d'Eiffel. Au cours de cette cérémonie, des discours furent prononcés par le général Ferrié, par Louis Germain-Martin (sous-secrétaire d'État aux P.T.T.), Léon Guillet (directeur de l'École centrale de Paris dont Eiffel était issu) et par Georges Lemarchand (président du conseil municipal de Paris). Dans le Massif Central, le viaduc de Garabit permet aux trains de passer la vallée encaissée d'une rivière, la Truyère. Entièrement métallique, il a été conçu par l'ingénieur Léon Boyer, et finalisé et réalisé par l'architecte Gustave Eiffel. Construit de 1880 à 1884, il fut ouvert à la circulation en 1888. Véritable défi architectural, le viaduc s'élève à une hauteur de 122 m au-dessus de la vallée, sur une longueur de 564 m. "Le viaduc de Garabit dans le Cantal [] est à l'origine des projets sophistiqués pour la Tour mais aussi de l'intérêt [d'Eiffel] porté à la météorologie et à l'aérodynamique. En effet, la région est montagneuse et soumise aux vents violents. L'ouvrage a donc nécessité des prouesses techniques encore jamais dépassées malgré la construction en 1876 du viaduc sur le Douro à Porto (Portugal). La stabilité des poutres-caissons, servant d'arbalétriers, et la résistance au vent ont constitué les deux défis de la réalisation. [] La nouveauté du projet réside dans la hauteur entre la voie ferrée et le cours d'eau, deux fois plus importante qu'à Porto, soit 122 m au lieu de 61m. She holds a torch above her head with her right hand, and in her left hand carries a tabula ansata inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals), the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A broken shackle and chain lie at her feet as she walks forward, commemorating the recent national abolition of slavery.[8] After its dedication, the statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States, seen as a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea. Bartholdi was inspired by a French law professor and politician, Édouard René de Laboulaye, who is said to have commented in 1865 that any monument raised to U.S. independence would properly be a joint project of the French and U.S. peoples. Because of the post-war instability in France, work on the statue did not commence until the early 1870s. In 1875, Laboulaye proposed that the French finance the statue and the U.S. provide the site and build the pedestal. Bartholdi completed the head and the torch-bearing arm before the statue was fully designed, and these pieces were exhibited for publicity at international expositions. The torch-bearing arm was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and in Madison Square Park in Manhattan from 1876 to 1882. Fundraising proved difficult, especially for the Americans, and by 1885 work on the pedestal was threatened by lack of funds. Publisher Joseph Pulitzer, of the New York World, started a drive for donations to finish the project and attracted more than 120,000 contributors, most of whom gave less than a dollar. The statue was built in France, shipped overseas in crates, and assembled on the completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe's Island. The statue's completion was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade and a dedication ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland. The statue was administered by the United States Lighthouse Board until 1901 and then by the Department of War; since 1933 it has been maintained by the National Park Service as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, and is a major tourist attraction. The monument has been temporarily closed since March 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Public access to the balcony around the torch has been barred since 1916.
