Ever since the early 17th century, the fleets of the Dutch East India Company had been bringing back loads of porcelain which rapidly became much sought-after luxuries. An almost inevitable consequence was the alacrity with which potteries at home, in Delft in particular, started imitating the material, shapes and decorations of Oriental China. The picture becomes more complicated, but more interesting too, due to the circumstance that these initially competitive imitations soon began to display an originality and quality of their own. Interrelations between East Asian pottery centres and the Dutch potteries of Delft provide the background for this exhibition.
