"Nell'estate 2012 Simon Starling ha realizzato Black Drop, un film che traccia una relazione tra l'astronomia e l'utilizzo della tecnologia delle immagini in movimento propria del cinema delle origini. L'artista partiva dal presupposto che il transito di Venere del 2012 sarebbe stato l'ultimo documentabile su celluloide (il prossimo transito avverrà nel 2117), vista la sua graduale uscita di produzione. Questo è stato lo spunto per considerare le due osservazioni del transito (quella del 1874 e quella del 2012) come le parentesi che racchiudono temporalmente l'intera storia del cinema in pellicola. Black Drop ripercorre lo sviluppo della "rivoltella fotografica", uno strumento inventato dall'astronomo francese Jules César Janssen per riprendere con sicurezza e precisione l'imminente passaggio di Venere davanti al Sole nel 1874 e diventato in seguito fondamentale per la nascita del cinematografo dei fratelli Lumiére. Insieme a una troupe cinematografica Simon Starling ha raggiunto le Hawaii e Tahiti per osservare e filmare il transito di Venere nei siti delle precedenti osservazioni e foto-documentazioni storiche (Point Venus, Tahiti e Honolulu).Il libro è una sorta di fotoromanzo che ricostruisce frame-by-frame il film, dove le parole della voce fuoricampo vengono riportate come un "commento alle immagini".Black Drop Ciné-roman racconta il rapporto tra l'astronomia, la fotografia e la tecnologia dell'immagine in movimento, calando le vicende in una storia fatta di viaggi epici e di lunghe distanze.".
