Dan Harper enlisted in the army in 1952 after leaving high school in Aiken, South Carolina. Shortly after completing basic training Dan was shipped to Korea and experienced some of the most vicious and brutal fighting of the entire Korean War, including combat on the now infamous Pork Chop Hill. His soldiering skills clearly became evident as he was rapidly promoted from private to sergeant in less than 12 months of service.
