Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. [4], viii, 230 pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Chronology. Appendix. Forword by Mrs. Esther Stroy Harper. Author written and signed inscription that reads: "(3 May, 12) To: Debra From: Dan Thank you so much very proud of you Daniel Harper". Daniel E. Harper is retired U.S. Military. A native of South Carolina, Dan Harper began his military career in 1952 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. The arc of his military career included battles on the now famous Pork Chop Hill which saw some of the most savage fighting and hand-to-hand combat of the entire Korean War. He retired from the military in 1975. LIFE OF A SOLDIER is a remarkable new book by Daniel E. Harper which details his 23-plus years of service in the United States Army. Dan Harper enlisted in the army in 1952 after leaving high school in Aiken, South Carolina. Shortly after completing basic training Dan was shipped to Korea and experienced some of the most vicious and brutal fighting of the entire Korean War, including combat on the now infamous Pork Chop Hill. His soldiering skills clearly became evident as he was rapidly promoted from private to sergeant in less than 12 months of service. Dan also served four tours of duty in Vietnam and served in several capacities including advisor, instructor, tank commander, and tank platoon sergeant, and acting platoon leader. Dan was decorated on several occasions for valor and bravery, and received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry with Palm, and other awards. Dan was also severely wounded during a battle and nearly lost both his legs. LIFE OF A SOLDER is often funny, at times serious, and offers many insightful lessons on life in the military. The book is a must read for those who served anytime in the military, soldiers, veterans, and students.
