Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. xxiii, [1], 311, [1] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Sources. Bibliography. Index. Ronald W. Zweig is an Australian-Israeli historian specializing in Hebrew and Judaic studies, with particular reference to the British Mandate in Palestine. He is currently the Marilyn and Henry Taub Professor of Israel Studies at New York University (NYU). Zweig is the author of a number of books on Jewish and Israel studies, including The Gold Train: The Destruction of the Jews and the Looting of Hungary (2002), the story of a train run by the Nazis, the so-called "Hungarian Gold Train", that left Budapest, Hungary during the Second World War, heading for a Nazi-controlled area in the Alps. The train was carrying gold, diamonds, and wedding rings that the Nazis had stolen from the Hungarian Jewish community. It was intercepted by the American military before it could reach its destination, and the fate of its contents has been the subject of speculation ever since. Zweig acted as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice on a related lawsuit-Rosner, et al. v. United States of America-which alleged U.S. military malfeasance. Zweig studied at the University of Sydney, then moved to England. After graduating with a Ph.D. in modern history from the University of Cambridge, he became a fellow at the University of Oxford's Center for Hebrew Studies, 1977-1978. He then joined the staff of Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and in 1983 transferred to the Department of Jewish History at Tel Aviv University, serving as Chair from 2003-2004. In 2004 he became the director of the Taub Center for Israel Studies at NYU. The disappearance of the assets stolen from Jews and taken aboard a train leaving from Budapest filled with Fascist ideologues, thieves, civil servants, and Nazi soldiers. The riveting, never-before-told story of one of World War II's most compelling and unresolved mysteries -- the disappearance of the loot on the Hungarian Gold Train. In 1944, with the Red Army rapidly closing in, an extraordinary group of fascist ideologues, thieves, civil servants and soldiers jumped onto the "Gold Train" in Budapest and headed west. On that train was carriage after carriage of loot -- gold, gems, cash, furs, carpets -- gleaned from one of the century's most terrible crimes. The destruction of the Hungarian Jews happened late in the war and with a unique bureaucratic efficiency. The officials who meticulously stripped the Jews of their jewelry, gold, silver, furnishings and other possessions before their murder believed that the stolen belongings of exterminated citizens were a major Hungarian state asset and at all costs were to be protected from the advancing Allies. The great Gold Train and the value of its cargo took on a legendary quality even as it steamed out of the station -- hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of assets were on the move, with cunning, desperate or gullible passengers trying to reach an illusory Nazi stronghold in the Alps. The fate of this property has been the subject of fantastic rumors ever since the end of the war and was the basis of a Cold War dispute between east and west. Ronald Zweig's gripping book, The Gold Train, illuminates what happened to the train and explores its journey, which goes on to this day, as legal battles continue over its contents. Drawing on a decade's worth of research into American, Israeli and European archives as well as private papers, eyewitness accounts and other sources, Zweig tells the full story of the Gold Train. He reveals the large cast of players enmeshed in the drama, including corrupt Hungarian and German Nazis, American and French armies, Jewish leaders from Hungary and Palestine, French security forces and international refugee organizations. He examines the myths that have developed around it and places this incredible event within the annals of Holocaust and Cold War history, including its impact on restitution policies through the postwar years to today. An astonishing tal. Marcel Koren (author photograph) (illustrator).…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. 336 pages. cover worn, With the Soviet army closing in on Budapest in 1944 a single train moved out of the station, crammed with booty from the Hungarian genocide (gold, jewels, si lverware, furs and furniture) and a desperate group of racist ideologues, civil servants, bodyguards and thieves. The journey of the train is the story of this book - both the literal journey from Central Europe towards the chimerical Nazi Alpine Redoubt and the symbolic journey whereby the Gold Train became the focu s for the hopes, greed and fear of all those who came in contact with it. Throug h this title, Ronald Zweig provides an account of the closing months of Fascist Europe and of how the post-war world tried to come to terms with the spiritual a nd physical inheritance of 400,000 murders.
