A Greek edition of the magical oracles of Zoroaster, which includes commentaries of Pletho and Psellus in Latin, together with a separate collection of metrical oracles, both edited by Johannes Opsopaeus (1556-1596, physician and philologist, professor of medicine at Heidelberg, whose principal literary activity related mainly to the Sibylline Oracles and Hippocrates). The two volumes, though separately bound together here, were also issued as the second and third parts of a three-volume collection, the first being of the Sybylline oracles. Both titles bear the fine woodcut Lutetian ship device of the so-called 'Compagnie de la Grand-Navire', which in 1599 comprised the printers Abel l'Angelier, Barthélmy Macé, Ambroise Drouart, Michel II and Laurent and Jean Sonnius (Répertoire d'imprimeurs 1265). Their individual devices can be seen on the ship's pennants. Die Schrift wurde offensichtlich Zoroaster untergeschoben. - "Zoroaster has the distinction of having been the first of the Magi, and a reformer of religion, of which all that is known is contained in the Zend-Avesta. But when he flourished, whether he was an actual or a mythical personage, whether there were more than one person of the name, are questions still debated by the authorities, who have not yet arrived at certainty. These discussions hardly concern the history of alchemy, and the alchemical work 'Clavis Artis' Jena 1738, which passes under his name, is obviously supposititious" (Ferguson). - Titel mit zwei Sammlerstempeln. Biblioteca dell'Accademia Nazionale dei Lince, deren Bilder Bruno Nardini 1989 veröffentlichte: "Zoroaster. Ermetismo e alchemia nelle miniature di un manoscritto del sec. XVII". - An der rosenkreuzerischen Herkunft des Textes besteht kein Zweifel, so steht das "J.V.S.F.R.O." auf dem Titel für "J.V.S. Frater Rosae[crucis] Ordinis". In der Vorrede wird gemahnt, das Traktat vor den "Welt-Kindern" zu verbergen. Diese bisher befolgte Vorschrift erkläre, "warum unser Zoroaster bishierher nicht gemeine geworden; Imo: ich habe denselben auf meinen 50. jährigen Reisen nur ein einzigmal mehrenteils in Hebräischer Sprache gefunden, aber sehr unvollkommen gefunden und dennoch wurde es vor einen großen Schatz gehalten, daß, man auch viele 1.000 Thl. hätte davor geben wollen, man es dennoch davor nicht würde erhandeln können." (vgl. dazu Michael Stausberg: Faszination Zarathushtra: Zoroaster und die Europäische Religionsgeschichte. S.948ff). Der anonyme Autor ist wahrscheinlich der gleiche, der 1735 als "R. Abrahami Eleazaris" ein "Uraltes Chymisches Werk" veröffentlichte (dort im zweiten Teil mit separatem Titel: "Donum Dei Samuelis Baruch, des Juden Rabbi, Astrologi und Philosophi"). In der Slg. Duveen findet sich bei diesem Titel ein handschriftlicher Hinweis: "Deutlicher Schlüssel, derer ienigen fremden Wörter so in diesen Büchern ['Abraham Eleazar' u. 'Samuel Baruch'] befindlich, und doch zum Theil in den Registern nicht erkläret stehen welche aber in dem Buche Zoroastro dem Juden, und Rabbi enthalten sind." (Duveen S.2). Weitere Indizien für die Zusammengehörigkeit der drei Titel enthält auch die Vorrede des vorliegenden Textes: "Gegenwärtiges MStum ist hier das einige welches von Wahrheiten in Arte Spagyrica geschrieben, wie denn auch Abraham der Jude und Samuel Baruch ihr Lob verdienen", sowie die erneute Anmerkung dieses "ertz-wichtige Werck, absonderlich das 3te Buch" zu verbergen. - Deckel mit kl.
