Wraps. Zustand: Fair. [2], 13, [1] pages. Table. Staplebound. Cover has wear and soiling. Small tear at upper staple. Published in late 1917 or 1918 based on 1917 date in the text. Sir Alfred Eckhard Zimmern (1879-1957) was a British classical scholar and historian, and political scientist writing on international relations. His book The Third British Empire was among the first to apply the expression "British Commonwealth" to the British Empire. He is also credited with the phrase "welfare state". He was Lecturer in Ancient History, New College, Oxford (1903), and Fellow and tutor, New College (1904-09). Subsequently, he was staff inspector, Board of Education (1912-15) and a member, Political Intelligence Department, Foreign Office. He was then Wilson Professor of International Politics, the first Professor of International Politics (also known as International Relations) in the whole world, University College of Wales (1919-21); having left Aberystwyth, he taught at Cornell University in 1922 and 1923. He was the inaugural Montague Burton Professor of International Relations, Oxford University (1930-44); co-founder, Royal Institute of International Affairs (1919); London Round Table Group (1913-1920s). He contributed to the founding of both the League of Nations Society, and UNESCO. He was Deputy Director of the Institute for Intellectual Co-operation, in Paris, in the mid-1920s; after tension with the Director, the French historian Julien Luchaire, both left. He was nominated in 1947 for the Nobel Peace Prize, in connection with his UNESCO work. This is an example of British wartime propaganda or at least attempts to sway international public opinion. While undated, it is believed that this was written when the author was associated with the Political Intelligence Department of the British Foreign Office.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'George Louis Beer: A Tribute to His Life and Work in the Making of History and the Molding of Public Opinion' offers a comprehensive examination of the life and intellectual legacy of one of the early 20th century's most influential historians. Written by esteemed contemporaries including Charles M. Andrews, A. E. Zimmern, and W. H. Shepardson, this collection of essays and tributes explores Beer's pivotal role in reshaping the understanding of British colonial history and his transition from an academic scholar to a key figure in international diplomacy. The work delves into Beer's scholarly rigor and his significant contributions to the Paris Peace Conference and the League of Nations' Mandates System. Readers will find a detailed portrait of a thinker who successfully bridged the gap between historical research and the active molding of public policy and opinion. This volume serves as both a biography and a critical assessment of the evolution of historiography during a period of global upheaval. It remains an essential resource for those interested in the history of the British Empire, the development of modern international relations, and the life of a dedicated scholar committed to global cooperation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
