A FASCINATING LIVRE D'ARTISTE, illustrated with 15 wonderful full-page hors-texte original drypoints by the author, depicting the daily life, architecture, and scenery of early-20th-century Algeria. 123 pp. printed on fine Dutch white laid paper plus 15 original drypoints printed on fine Dutch cream laid paper. Edition limited to only 120 numbered copies, SIGNED by the artist / author underneath the limitation statement. Folio. A PRISTINE COPY IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPS. Light wear to wraps, internally UNCUT, FINE; AND BRIGHT. Livres d'artiste with text and original prints by the same person are very rare. Zilcken (1857-1930) was an important painter and etcher. Large 4to. Pp. xii, 119, (4). Wide margins. Preface by Léonce Bénédite. With thirty (fifteen doublicates) drypoint etchings of which fifteen are watercolours, signed Zilcken. All protected by tissue guards. A few quires starting to loosen. Original printed wrappers housed in a slipcase. From an edition of 120 this is one of only eight copies on Japon with a suite of etchings water coloured by the artist, this is number 3. A few leaves with a tiny marginal stain but overall a lovely and crisp copy of a very attractive work.A wonderful collection of etchings depicting views, landscapes, houses, and people from different parts of Algeria. Zilcken presents an exotic land with appealing and harmoniously colourful images. Philip Zilcken (1857-1930) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter and writer. He was taught by Klinkenberg and Anton Mauve at the Drawing Academy in the Hague. As a printmaker, Zilcken achieved considerable fame, particularly through his reproduction of etchings of works by 17th century masters such as Vermeer. He made several journeys to Algeria and Egypt. An interesting introduction by Léonce Bénédite praising the work ( Il nous dit luimême son enchantement en mettant le pied dans cette "Casbah fantastique").…

Floury, 1910, in-4°, 33 x 25,5 cm, XI pp + 119 pp + (5)nn pp + 15 dry point etchings, each one protected with a serpente with a printed caption, bound in modern green half leather, gilt title on smooth spine, original covers preserved and bound in at the end. Fine copy allthough the original front cover and the half title have some stains , lower margin of title sligthly discolored and with one tiny stain. Still a fine uncut, nearly stainless (apart from stains mentioned) copy. This is an unnumbered copy of a a total of 120. It is dedicated in manuscript by the artist to Léonce Bénédite, curator of the Luxembourg Museum in Paris and author of the preface of this album. All the dry points are signed in the margin by the artist with a stamp signature. The artist, at one time secretary to the first wife of the Dutch king Willem III, travelled several times to Algeria and Egypt and gained some fame as an ''orientalist ''. He was one of the very few dutch artists who gained entry into the French avant-garde at the start of the impressionist and the symbolist movement. He was befriended with Paul Verlaine who stayed at his home during his visit to Holland in 1892. In 1900 the Parisian art editor Floury published the first volume of his mémoires ; '' Souvenirs I ''.
