The Dahui Temple [Dahuisi] complex in Beijing, constructed in 1513 and originally consisting of some 180 structures, was once arguably the grandest Buddhist site in the capital, but later imperial and then Communist neglect, looting and fire reduced the complex to a single surviving building, the Great Compassion Hall [Dabei dian]. This remaining hall nevertheless still reflects the grandeur of the original site, boasting a plethora of imposing wooden and clay Buddhist sculptures, still brilliantly coated in mineral pigments. Under initial government protection since 1957 and declared a national cultural relic in 2001, the building and its contents are now under renovation, but still closed to public viewing.
