This book, first published in 1913, is a collection of letters written by Zeyneb to her friend, feminist journalist Grac…e Ellison. As well as discussing the political situation in Turkey, Hanoum compares the life of Turkish women with their European counterparts and presents a more balanced view of real harem life. Witty and forthright, the author shares her opinions on strange Western phenomena such as tennis, snobbery and the poor quality of English food. She also offers views on the suffragette movement and muses on the freedoms enjoyed by women in the West. The author's outsider status provides fascinating insights into European culture and such diverse experiences as tea at the House of Commons and bullfighting. This remains an entertaining and touching travelogue from a unique viewpoint.

A fine first edition of this book composed of letters written by elites of the late Ottoman Empire, Zeyneb and h…er sister Melek, to Zeyneb's friend, the British feminist journalist Grace Ellison, during their travels to Europe in 1906 after fleeing patriarchal oppression in the Ottoman Empire. The book is still regarded today as an important source for women's history, feminism, Ottoman social life, and travel literature. In her letters, Zeyneb compares the daily lives of Turkish women, harem life, and social customs with the freedoms she observes in Europe. She recounts many of her European experiences with surprise, humour, and a critical eye: tennis, social privileges, bad English food, the suffragette movement, bullfighting, and having tea in the House of Commons. These observations offer a sharp perspective that both critiques Eastern society and exposes the contradictions of the West. The book is a good examples of travel writing and memoirs produced in the early 20th century by an elite Ottoman woman. Zeyneb's writings reflect both the feminist sensibilities of an Ottoman Muslim woman and her critiques of Western society. The work establishes a form of cultural dialogue between Eastern and Western women, while also attempting to challenge prevailing stereotypes of the "Oriental woman". Thanks to the notes and commentary added by Grace Ellison, the book was made more accessible to the British readership.
