Rather than a standard history, it presents Gdansk through the lens of the sea and the Vistula- the vital arteries that fuelled the city's legendary prosperity. This perspective follows the far-sighted maritime policies of Polish and Lithuanian rulers, from the Piasts to the Jagiellons, who linked the Kingdom's fate to the Dominium Maris Baltici - the pursuit of strategic hegemony for sovereignty and control over Baltic trade. They also recognised the significance of the Vistula - the infrastructural foundation of the famed Amber Road, the ancient trade route connecting the Slavic lands with Southern Europe - which, in turn, help transform the river into a massive engine of commerce. The book illustrates how this immense wealth found expression in grand architecture, scientific patronage, and progressive social policies. These themes are explored through the prism of a unique, hand-coloured 1687 edition of Reinhold Curicke's historical compendium, whose work is further situated within four centuries of Gdansk historiography. The visual heart of the volume is drawn from the archives of the Gdansk Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences, featuring original 15th- to 18th-century woodcuts, copperplates, and hand-drawn maps. Many of these are previously unpublished, unique works that capture both the grand sweep of history and the curious, everyday moments of the city's past. As the 17th-century pastor Daniel Kalaj wrote, famously comparing the mutual prosperity of the city and Poland: "Poland is well with Gdansk, and Gdansk with her; Like a golden Crown set with a Diamond." -- Contents: Gdansk 997-1997; From the Authors; The Maritime Port-Emporium of the Polish Crown; The Diamond in the Crown [Gdansk Coat of Arms; The Upland Gate; The Prison Gate and the House of Torture; The House of the Fraternity of St George; The Golden Gate; The Main City Hall; Neptune's Fountain; The Court of Artus; The Green Gate; The Crane; Town Court; The Great Armoury; The Church of Our Lady (St Mary's Church); The King's Chapel; The Church and Monastery of Dominicans (St Nicholas Church); St John's Church; Church of the Holy Spirit; St Elisabeth's Church & the Orphanage; The Old Town Hall; The Great Mill; St Catherine's Church; St Bridget's Church; St Bartholomew's Church; St Jacob's Hospital-Church; The Gate of Corpus Christi; The House of Smallpox (Lazaretto); The Prison; The Buttery Market; New Gardens; Siedlce; Grodzisko; The Firing Range; The Corpus Christi Church; The Sandpit; The Church of Our Saviour; Scotland (Old Scotland); The Church of the Holy Trinity and the Chapel of St Anna; The Library of the City Council; Church of St Peter and St Paul; The Small Armoury; The Lowland Gate; The Zulawska Gate; St Barbara's Church; The Church of St Angels; The Cistercian Monastery; The Wisloujscie Fortress; The Felt-Mill; The Cable Railway]; Reinhold Curicke and His Work in the Field of Historical Documentation in 14th to 17th Century Gdansk / Zbigniew Nowak [The Beginnings of Historical Writing in Gdansk; Historical Writing in Pre-Curicke Gdansk; Reinhold Curicke as the Author of the Historical Description of the City of Gdansk; The Fate of Reinhold Curicke's Work]; Footnotes; Illustrations; Bibliography.…
