Subject: Lilienthal, Theodore (1829-1894) --Pictorial works --New Orleans (La.) --Pictorial works --20th century --History --19th century. Summary: This book brings together all the surviving photographs--126 of the original 150--from the remarkable series entitled "La Nouvelle Orleans et ses environs, taken of New Orleans in 1867 by the city's most important photographer, Theodore Lilienthal. Representing the first municipally sponsored photographic survey of any american city, and only recently rediscovered, the photographs--of every aspect of the city, from urban palaces and stately mansions to factories and asylums--were exhibited at the Paris World Exposition in 1867, before being formally presented to Napoleon III, Emperor of France from 1852 to 1871. This book places the photographs in the context of contemporary photographic practice, nineteenth-century city building and urban iconography, and of the need for reconstruction and economic renewal in the South following the devastation of the American Civil War. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Ulrich Wüst (\*1949) trained as an urban planner and began photographing East German cities in the late 1970s. Today, his early work is widely recognized as a subtly formulated critique of social conditions in the GDR and one of the most important photographic records of the socialist state. Since the 1990s, he has expanded his practice to focus on the memory landscape of reunified Germany and the transformations of both city and countryside, particularly the villages and farming culture of Uckermark and other rural regions. In this first monograph on Wüst, Van Zante provides a context for his work in American and German urban photography and photography of place. Over two hundred photographs are published here, many for the first time, including a selection of Wüst's distinctive leporellos of titled series. An interview with the photographer and an exhibition and publishing history are included.Gary Van Zante is curator of the photography, design and architecture collections at the MIT Museum, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA; Ulrich Wüst (\*1949), ausgebildeter Stadtplaner, begann in den späten 1970er-Jahren ostdeutsche Städte zu fotografieren.
