In questo periodo, si à verificata una rilevante concentrazione del capitale nelle mani dei fondi pensione, dei fondi d'investimento, dei fondi speculativi, delle banche e delle imprese di assicurazione. Sono state effettuate notevoli pressioni sui dirigenti delle imprese industriali per adottare strategie volte a massimizzare i profitti e il valore delle azioni, secondo un'ottica di breve termine. Tali strategie sono state realizzate mediante operazioni di ingegneria finanziaria sempre pià di tipo speculativo e sempre meno di carattere imprenditoriale e ispirate alla teoria secondo cui i dirigenti hanno un solo dovere: quello di massimizzare il profitto e il valore delle azioni. Lo sbocco di questa situazione à stato l'irrompere - a partire dai primi anni Novanta - sullo scenario socio-economico della grande corporation irresponsabile.
