The present Chinese Postal Service owes its origin to the Tientsin Treaty signed in the 8th year of Emperor Hsien Feng (1858), under which the then Manchu government assumed the responsibility for the transit of official correspondence to and from the various foreign legations. For the implementation of this Treaty, the Yamen in charge of foreign affairs directed the In-pector-General of Customs to organize a postal service, which was then placed under his concurrent charge for thirty-eight years, before a separate Postal Administration came into being. The 60th anniversary of the Postal Service to be celebrated this year is to count from the date of jts inauguration as a separate administration, for, if counting from the very inception of the service, it almost comes to a centenary. During the past century, the world witnessed many changes and revolutions, and in our country the transitions were even more unprecedented.
