In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Text in English. 176 pp. Staining to edge of textblock. Minor edge wear. The charm of the Japanese woodblock print is unique. Artists of other countries have made woodblocks, but nowhere else has the medium been exploited with such love and imagination, and nowhere else have the result…s been works of such appeal. This unique appeal derives from many factors: the special Japanese feling for wood, Japan's magnificent handmade papers, the traditional use of water colors based on Japanese and Chinese painting, the development of unequaled tools, a heritage of devoted craftsmanship. All of these have combined to create a technique whose warmth and character seduce the senses. The charm of Japanese woodblocks has been extolled in hundreds of publications, but never has the source of that charm been analyzed as thoroughly, and expertly as it is here. To the artist, to the collector, to the lover of fine prints, this volume holds the answers to a thousand hows and whys. It is a book which springs from the craftsman's dedication to the right way of working and the artist's wonder at the infinite riches of experience. The authors are specially suited to their task. Toshi Yoshida, under the guidance of his father, Hiroshi Yoshida, began at age thirteen to learn carving and printing from artisans of the old school. These men had been chosen by the elder Yoshida to realize his own prints; they were experts, and having learned by apprenticeship themselves they knew how to put a youngster through the mill. He learned the craft and he learned respect for it. Hiroshi Yoshida was, as his son says, more traditional than modern. But he could do anything his artisans could, he was alert to new effects, and as his own publisher he brought the making of his prints under his own control, under the control of the artist. These were big steps towards the position taken by the creative print makers of today, and his son found no difficulty in moving the rest of the way. He is at home with both traditional and modern prints.
