In den WarenkorbPaper Boards. Zustand: Near fine. Luncheon Menu. Octavo, [8pp]. Printed card stock boards, title printed in black ink. Bound with red, white and blue string. Photograph of Harry Truman in Independence, Missouri, affixed to half title. Includes luncheon menu and a distinguished list of guests. This copy was inscribed to Sec. John… Snyder, who was in attendance at the luncheon: "To the greatest Sec. of the Treasury, from his friend, Harry Truman." John W. Snyder (1895-1985) served as the 54th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1946 to 1953 under President Harry S. Truman. Snyder was a close personal friend of Truman, which played a significant role in his appointment. During his tenure, he focused on post-World War II economic stabilization, managing the transition from a wartime to a peacetime economy, and tackling issues related to inflation and the national debt. He was instrumental in the implementation of the Marshall Plan, which aimed to rebuild and revitalize war-torn European economies. Snyder's policies also included maintaining price controls and supporting housing programs to address postwar housing shortages. He left office on January 20, 1953, and remained friends with President Truman until his passing in 1972. The Luncheon for the Honorable Harry S. Truman, held July 2, 1953 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City, with a great inscription to his Treasury Secretary, John W. Snyder. The luncheon was hosted by The American Weekly newspaper. Original tan buckram, spines with red and black morocco gilt leather labels. Spines and boards worn and soiled, but bindings remain tight and strong. Internally clean and free of markings. A good, sound set. $450. * This second edition, written by preeminent Harvard Law professor Samuel Williston, served as the definitive guide to commercial law in the early to mid-20th century. It merges historical English and American common law principles with the statutory rules of the Uniform Sales Act (USA) of 1906, which Williston himself drafted under the direction of the Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. Capturing commercial law at a critical turning point from fragmented 19th-century common law to codified statutory law, this monumental work laid the conceptual foundation for Article 2 (Sales) of the modern Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). Moderate toning to interior, occasional light foxing. A very good copy in a well-preserved, unsophisticated binding. $1,500. * Third and first American editions, respectively. Scotsmen Thomas Muir, an advocate, and Joseph Gerrald, a political activist, were ardent supporters of the American and French Revolutions and a proponent of comprehensive parliamentary reform in Great Britain. Both men were involved with the London Corresponding Society, which was targeted alongside other groups during a wave of prosecutions by Pitt's government after the French Revolution. In 1793, five men were tried for sedition in highly politicized proceedings, among them Muir and Gerrald. The trials predictably resulted in guilty verdicts. Muir and Gerrald were both sentenced to fourteen years' transportation to the Australian penal colony of Botany Bay. Gerrald died there in 1796; Muir managed to escape, but his health was ruined as a result and he died in 1798. The five activists tried between 1793 and 179. 2 titles in 1. He Cried, "And Bless the Sight, For that Scar was Won by a Slave." [New York], September 1887. Attractively glazed and matted 10-1/2" x 8-1/2" (26.7 x 21.6 cm) pen-and-ink… drawing in handsome 16" x 14-1/2" (40.6 x 36.8 cm) wooden frame. A few minor nicks and scratches to frame, a few tiny spots to matte, light uniform toning to image. Overall a crisp, well-preserved piece of original late 19th-century American illustration art. $1,850 * This striking, emotionally charged drawing was executed as an illustration for "De Valley an' de Shadder," a short story by Macon, Georgia author Harry Stilwell Edwards (1855-1938). It was first published in The Century Magazine (January 1888, p. 476) and later reprinted in Edwards' collection Two Runaways and Other Stories (New York: Century Co., 1889, opposite p. 192, where it bears the variant caption, "See, If I Speak Not the Truth!"). While both Edwards' prose and Kemble's illustrations frequently relied on the paternalistic and racial stereotypes standard for Southern literature of the Reconstruction era, Kemble-famed as the original illustrator of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn-frequently injected a depth of humanity into his subjects that contrasted with the stock-caricatures of his contemporaries. "Look!" He Cried captures the dramatic climax of the story. In a packed courtroom, General Robert Thomas defends a former slave, Ben Thomas, who stands accused of murdering a vicious local antagonist. To prove Ben's honorable character, the General aggressively bares the defendant's chest to reveal a massive scar-sustained at Gettysburg during Pickett's Charge, when Ben braved battlefield fire to carry the body of his slain master (the General's brother) to safety. Edwards' text captures the exact moment Kemble illustrates: "See if I speak not the truth!" He tore open the prisoner's shirt and laid bare his breast, on which the silent splendor of the afternoon sun streamed. A great ragged seam marked it from left to right. "Look!" he cried, "and bless the sight, for that scar was won by a slave in an hour that tried the souls of freemen and put to its highest test the best manhood of the South." A powerful and visually arresting piece by one of America's fore. New York, 1887. 10-1/2" 8-1/2" pen and ink (illustrator).

Several minor scuffs and nicks to frame. An exceptional, unique piece of original artwork capturing a defining moment in American legal and criminal history. $3,500. * This striking original gouache was created to illustrate "Leaden Footed Justice in New York State," a feature article published in the Special Feature section of the New York Tribune on Sunday, March 1, 1914. The penciled caption reads:"Mr. Justice Precedent wearing his famous wig composed entirely of split hairs and adorned with the ceremonial crimson tape." The caricature was a scathing commentary on the notoriously protracted, bureaucratically tangled legal proceedings of the Becker-Rosenthal Murder case, which centered on NYPD Police Lieutenant Charles Becker, who ran a massive protection racket targeting illegal Manhattan casinos. When gambling house owner Herman Rosenthal threatened to expose Becker's corruption to District Attorney Charles S. Whitman, Becker hired a gang of underworld executioners (including "Gyp the Blood" and "Lefty Louie") to gun Rosenthal down outside the Hotel Metropole. The investigation and subsequent trials completely dominated New York front pages. Becker's first trial began on October 7, 1912, resulting in a conviction that was subsequently overturned on appeal by the New York Court of Appeals due to judicial bias. His highly anticipated second trial began on May 6, 1914 (just over two months after this cartoon appeared). Becker was convicted a second time and, after his appeals were exhausted in 1915, went to the electric chair at Sing Sing-marking the first time in U.S. history a police officer was executed for murder. The case profoundly shook the public psyche and entered the cultural lexicon, most. New York 1912-1914. Image in 30-1/2" x 24" frame (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbAlbany, New York, 1836. 17-1/2" x 12-3/4". Unrecorded 1836 Broadside of the Laws and Regulations of Albany's Public Market Houses [New York]. [Albany]. [Market Laws]. A Law in Addition to a Law, Entitled "Of the Public Market Houses." Passed February 1, 1836. The Mayor, Aldermen and Commonalty of the City of Albany, in Common Co…uncil Convened, do Ordain as Follows. Erastus Corning, Mayor. Albany, [New York]: Printed by E. B. Child, No. 6 South Pearl-Street, 1836. Single-sheet broadside. 17-1/2" x 12-3/4". Text in a single column divided into eleven numbered sections, enclosed within a wide, decorative typographical border. Mounted and matted. Light toning, minor vertical and horizontal fold lines. A few expert archival repairs to the verso with no loss to text. Slight ink fading to five lines, yet text remains entirely legible. A very good, well-preserved copy of an unrecorded local municipal survival. $1,500. * An apparently unrecorded municipal broadside detailing the stringent public health and economic regulations established for the Centre Market in Albany, New York. Passed during a period of rapid infrastructure growth in the city, this law outlines eleven comprehensive sections regulating the handling, inspection, and sale of meat, poultry, and other foodstuffs. The regulations meticulously cover daily hours of operation, the allocation and leasing of individual stalls, licensing fees, vendor behavior, and the formal salary and duties of the market's superintendent. Section ten formally repeals all conflicting prior ordinances, and section eleven mandates that the new codes take effect on February 8, 1836. This broadside stands as a vital artifact documenting early American urban public health history, capturing the exact moment municipal governments transitioned from loose agrarian trading to highly structured public sanitation to combat foodborne illness and spoilage in dense city centers. Furthermore, the document bears the printed signature of Albany Mayor Erastus Corning (serving 1834-1837), the prominent iron magnate who later founded the New York Central Railroad and established one of New York's longest-lasting political dynasties. The printer, Edmund B. Child, was an active local publisher known for Child's Albany Directory. He operated his workshop at the corner of South Pearl and State Street, placing his press directly adjacent to the bustl. Albany, New York, 1836. 17-1/2" x 12-3/4" (illustrator).
