First thus edition hard back binding in publisher's original salmon paper covers, black title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 8'' x 5½''. Contains 187 printed pages of text with monochrome illustrated headers. Minimal wear to the covers, foxing to the closed page edges, light ghosting to the end papers. Very Good condition book in Very Good condition colour illustrated dust wrapper with small circular chip to the centre of the spine, shallow rubs to the spine ends and corners, price clipped. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection, this preserves and prolongs the life of the paper, it is not adhered to the book or to the dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A. Dodington (1691-1762); Oxenden (1694-1775) and Yonge (1693-1755) were Whig politicians and allies of Sir Robert Walpole. The fragment of a document would appear to relate to their positions as Commissioners of the Treasury. Dimensions 3 1/2 inches by 4 inches. Somewhat discoloured with age, but in good condition and with good clear signatures: 'Geo: Dodington | Geo Oxenden | Wia: Yonge'. The printed fragment to the left of the signatures reads: 'ceipt of His | said [in manuscript] 34. as by a | e same Day | Interest for | te of Four | num, at the | onths, from | alley, until | Principal. | th [in manuscript] his - or | ce, shall be'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB, along with that of E. D. Morel, a campaigner like Roger Casement against abuses in the Belgian Congo. (Morel had been given a 'testimonial luncheon' two days before the writing of this letter.) 1p, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged, creased and worn. Folded for postage. Ten lines of stylishly-written text. Signed 'W. Rothenstein'. After thanking her for writing he states: 'Nothing could please me more than to feel that you care for something I have put into the painting of your noble husband. I think you must have been made to feel that there are countless people who do want to register their appreciation of sincerity & gallantry, of bearing under every kind of difficulty, & each has his own way of doing it.' Rothenstein's painting has not been traced.

Two pieces of uncommon Edwardian bibliographical ephemera. Both items worn and aged, and the catalogue somewhat dogeared. Both with some pencil marking. ONE (1909 catalogue): 32pp, 12mo. Drophead title on first page: 'Macmillan's Three-and-Sixpenny Library of Books by Popular Authors / Crown 8vo.' The first two pages carry a description of the series, which 'comprises over four hundred volumes in various departments of Literature. Prominent among them is a new and attractive edition of The Works of Thackeray, issued under the editorship of Mr. Lewis Melville. [.] The Works of Charles Dickens, reprinted from the first editions, with all the Original Illustrations, and with Introductions, Biographical and Bibliographical, by Charles Dickens the Younger'. Other authors whose works feature in the list are Charles Lever, Sir Walter Scott, Thomas Hardy, Mr. F. Marion Crawford, Rolf Boldrewood, Mr. H. G. Wells, Gertrude Atherton, Mr. Egerton Castle, Mr. A. E. W. Mason, Maarten Maartens, and Miss Rosa Nouchette Carey', as well as Charles Kingsley, Frederick Denison Maurice, Thomas Hughes, Dean Farrar, Charlotte M. Yonge, Mrs. Craik and Mrs. Oliphant. Descriptive text precedes the Thackeray and Scott editions, and the Dickens and Scott editions each have a page of press opinions. Print runs are given for the 26 works by Rosa N. Carey, and a total of 'Over 700,000 of these works have been printed'. TWO (undated Dickens prospectus). 4pp, 12mo bifolium on grey paper. First page headed 'Macmillan's 3s. 6d. Series'. Predating Item One, since dates of publication (without year) are given for the first six volumes. The first page gives details of the edition, the other three pages carry specimens: p.2 from the introduction to Pickwick Papers by 'Mr. Charles Dickens, the novelist's eldest son', p.3, a page from Pickwick Papers; p.4, an illustration ('Mr. Pickwick in chase of his hat') from the same.

Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. 36pp.; square 12mo; in later black marbled paper wrappers with slight creasing and wear at edges. Pages 4 & 5 with some tanning in the gutter near lower edge, off of the text; p. 6 thru 8 with a few spots of foxing; the rest of the text shows only light foxing at edges.

Including a reference to losses sustained by British merchants in the West Indies (p. 13). William Pulteney, who was viciously attacked in the preface, thought the tract was written by John Hervey and wrote A Proper Reply which led to a duel. The real author was Walpole's lieutenant Yonge, who was especially loathed by George II and referred to by the latter as 'Stinking Yonge'. European Americana 731/206. Goldsmiths' 6925.
