Exterior shows soiling and staining in leather is torn and frayed. Interior binding is good, no hinge issues found, nothing torn or loose. Pages are toned due to age and scattered foxing and spotting is present though the worst is on the end pages and pastedowns. Front end page has a stamp in the upper right corner from a Pittsburgh Law Bookseller. Front pastedown has the signature of the original owner in the center and then to small letters written in red pencil along the top edge. No other handwriting found, no library markings present. This is the original publication and not a reprint. This is also only volume four (Vol. IV) and was published in 1819.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, tan cloth boards with banded spine. Remnants of leather labels on spine as well. This is not the original exterior appears to be a late 19th century rebinding. Exterior is soiled stained but corners are sharp. Internal binding is good except for some minor hinge splits and text pages are tight. The front pastedown contains a name stamp of one of the attorneys who owned the book. There is also a small label from the Law publisher in the corner. Pages are tone due to age and foxing and spotting is present throughout. The only other handwriting found in the book is on the title page where the original owner (attorney) signed his name in the top right corner. The signature belongs to Charles Pleasants (1807-1865). Mr. Pleasants was commissioned as prothonotary of the Supreme Court for the Northern District of Pennsylvania for almost 30 years. This is the original publication (though rebound) and not a reprint. This is also only volume one (Vol. I) and was published in 1817. Signed by Other. …

Edward Shippen, IV 1729-1806 was lawyer, judge, government official and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia. In 1791, he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, serving with Jasper Yeates and Edward Burd, both kinsmen and former students. Shippen became chief justice in 1799, but in 1804 was impeached on flimsey, political grounds. The next year the Pennsylvania Senate acquitted him and his associates. 8vo, 491, 86 pp. The text is followed by a 96-page appendix which cites numerous legal points in previous cases as they relate to this one.
