Believed to have been copied from Chinese originals, they are among the oldest such paintings to have survived in Japan and have origins possibly as early as the 9th century CE. The two paintings, the Mandala of the Womb World and the Mandala of the Diamond World, are each described in some detail in the text, illustrated by many close-up photos, and are also reproduced, with keys to their composition, in larger fold-out plates in the rear.
