Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: As New. 1st Edition. xxii, 341 pages illustrations 24 cm. ; full natural linen ; dj in mylar. Sales slip laid in. Land has always been an important subject in Texas. In colonial times there was no gold or silver, no rich cities or advanced civilizations to lure Europeans and Americans to Texas. They went for land. When Texas won her independence from Mexico in 1836, she had only one source of wealth -- 216 million acres of public lands. Thomas Lloyd Miller traces the history of those lands from 1519 to modern times. He gives a complete account of the acquisition and disposition of the lands; explains what has been done about minerals, timber, and oil; and discusses the work of the Texas Land Office and its commissioners. Using documentary sources, he examines the conditions of Texas lands from Spanish grants to the present conflict over tidewater lands and offshore sunken treasure. Into the story are woven fraud, carelessness, and sometimes unwise, decisions, but also much wisdom on the part of the dedicated statesmen and commissioners. It is a unique history of self-government in the disposition of the public domain, not equaled anywhere else in America, or, indeed, in history.…

In den WarenkorbPaperback. 8vo. Tan wrappers. (7pp). Illustration. Near fine. Christmas keepsake printed in a small quantity for distribution by Senator Yarborough (1903-96), Democratic senator from Texas who rode in the Dallas motorcade carrying President Kennedy in 1963, designed for him by Encino Press's founder, William D. Wittliff (better known these days as the screenwriter for "The Perfect Storm" and other films). The text consists of a speech that Yarborough gave at the unveiling of the Sam Houston five-cent commemorative stamp in (where else?) Houston on 10 January 1964. On the front page, he boldly signs and inscribes in in black fineline: "For Ralph Newman -- Who knows the many facets of Sam Houston -- and the Documents which come from each one -- May the Holidays Cheer you, and 1972 improve your already enriched life," signed and dated December 1972. Ralph G. Newman (1912-2000) founded Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop and, no doubt, supplied Yarborough with Houston and other documents for his collection. With original, stamped and cancelled envelope, signed by Yarborough at upper left and addressed in his huge, flamboyant hand. A choice presentation copy of a very uncommon Encino Press publication.…

In den WarenkorbThis Democratic senator from Texas (1957-71) rode in the Dallas motorcade carrying President Kennedy in 1963. TLS (carbon copy), 2pp (separate leaves), 8½" X 11", Austin, TX 1974 April 2. Addressed to J. Richard Stoltz. Near fine. Tiny staple hole at upper left corner. Excellent content. Yarborough thanks the president of Lincoln University for the honorary degree being conferred upon him, but regrets he cannot attend the ceremony: "It now appears that my obligations are such that as a practicing attorney, I cannot leave Texas that day This is to express my deep regret to you, which I hope you will convey to President Emeritus and Mrs. Raymond N. Dooley, under whose administration I was granted this honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree." He encloses (not present) "a small token for the expenses you will incur" and pleads poverty: "It is so small that I am almost embarrassed to include it, but having been unsuccessful in my campaign to remain in the United States Senate in 1970, and to return there in 1972, I am deep in debt from those campaigns, and have been forced to curtail (temporarily, I hope) other things which I would like to support." Usual enormous, bold signature in black fineline -- original, not carbon copy.…
