Zustand: good, good. First Edition. First Printing. 301, notes, index, some edge soiling. One of the series United States in the World, Foreign Perspectives. This account of American-Russian relations written for an American audienceby Soviet historians represents a novel venture for both scholarship and publishing. The authors trace the course of U.S. -Russian relations from the years preceding the American Revolution to the 1970s, when human rights issues began to cause friction. Those relations, the authors believe, were characterized by America's repeated failure to take advantageof opportunities to improve them. Their view of the world is truly and strikingly different from an American one, and it is important to understand that it is a theory shared by most, if not all, Soviet intellectuals who study America and its foreign policy.

Hardcover. 278, [2] p. References. From Wikipedia: "Progress Publishers was a Moscow-based Soviet publisher founded in 1931. It was noted for its English-language editions of books on Marxism-Leninism. Progress Publishers were particularly also known for their "Short History of USSR" and ABC series (ABC of Party, ABC of Socialism, ABC of Dialectical Materialism, etc.). They also published many scientific books, books on arts, political books, classic books, children's literature, novels and short fiction, books in source languages for people studying foreign languages, guidebooks and photographic albums. They also published, in 1979, "Marx and Engels on the United States", a compilation drawn from letters, articles, and various other works. One of the common features of all Progress books was their "request to reader" to send an opinion and suggestions on the book. It reads: REQUEST TO READERS. Progress Publishers would be glad to have your opinion of this book, its translation and design and any suggestions you may have for future publications. Please send all your comments to 21, Zubovsky Boulevard, Moscow, U.S.S.R." This statement is in this volume. Good. No dust jacket. Ex-library. bookplate residue inside front cover. Ink notes whited overs inside cover and on fep. Pencil erasure residue on end pages. Spine label removed. Appears ex-library. Presumed first printing in English of updated text.

Erstausgabe
Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First edition. 16mo. 61 [1] pp. Text in English. Printed wrappers. Staples lightly oxidized, wrappers with two creases, just about near fine. A refutation of *The Gulag Archipelago* by a Soviet historian, published the year after Solzhenitsyn's masterpiece was published in Russian (in Paris), and the same year it was published in English and French. Yakovlev, who can barely contain his disdain, calls Solzhenitsyn a "pseudo-historian and traitor," accuses him of "grossly falsifying history," and so on. 35 years later, *The Gulag Archipelago* would become required reading for Russian students. The Russian imprint on the final page does not state a limitation, as is sometimes the caseit does mentions the price is 8 kopecksbut the pamphlet is an uncommon and important window into the Soviet Union's response to "the most powerful single indictment of a political regime ever to be levied in modern times" (George F. Kennan), "the book that brought down an empire" (Doris Lessing).
