In what way do the paints participate, how do canvas and paper behav…e, where does the brush lead the hand Airy and dense, light and dark, inner and outer world, broad brushstrokes and fine lines in the tradition of ink painting, resistance and flow, solid surfaces and floating colours. All of this, Duan continues, corresponds to the rhythm of breathing in and breathing out. Added to this is the element of chance, which can be brought into play without esoteric connotations, as for instance with the compositional technique of John Cage, who drew on the »I Ching« as a structuring principle. Ideas of form are thus invariably linked to procedural questions: in what way does chance influence the work, how much of this chance is good for it Originating from Taoism, the principles of yin and yang are then almost inevitably invoked. Originally, these terms stood for the »darkness and the south bank of the river«, for a »shady place« (yin) and, in contrast to this, for the »brightness of the sun, the sunny hill on the south side of the mountains« (yang). Comment les couleurs participent-elles, comment la toile et le papier se comportent-ils, où le pinceau mène-t-il la main Légèreté et épaisseur, clair et sombre, monde intérieur et extérieur, larges traits de pinceau et lignes fines dans la tradition de l encre de Chine, résistance et flux, surfaces épaisses et couleurs flottantes. Le tout correspond, toujours selon Duan, au rythme de l inspiration et de l expiration. S y ajoute le hasard, mis en jeu sans connotations ésotériques, comme c est le cas notamment dans la technique de composition de John Cage qui fait du «I Ging» un principe structurant. C est pourquoi les représentations de formes sont toujours associées à des questions de procédés: quelle est l influence du hasard sur l oeuvre, quelle proportion de hasard lui est favorable Les principes yin et yang, issus du taoïsme, sont alors presque inévitablement sollicités. Ils incarnaient à l origine l «obscurité sur la rive sud du fleuve», un «endroit ombragé» (yin) et, à l opposé, le «rayonnement du soleil, l élévation ensoleillée sur le versant sud des montagnes» (yang).
