Though mixed farming has been a common practice in India since immemorial due to existence of complementary and supplementary relationship between crop production and animal production systems dairy has gained a momentum due to commercialization and it is a rural income generating activity in India. Agriculture enterprise has not provided constant employment to rural people but dairy has not only provided gainful employment but also provided assured and regular income. The national income from animal husbandry has increased from 3 per cent in 1950 to 25 per cent at present in GDP / GDPR of agriculture. Hence it is necessary to know the cost structure and profitability / sustainability of dairy to formulate policies for developing animal husbandry in India with particular reference to dairying which has high adaptability feasibility acceptability profitability and sustainability in rural India. Dairying even provided regular income during the past 5 drought years. Hence an attempt has been made in this book to know the position of dairy animals in semi arid regions affected due to drought during 5 past years. A cluster of villages were selected in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh Kolar district of Karnataka and Erode District of Tamil Nadu. At each location it covers 75 farmers i.e. 15 households each in landless marginal (1 ha) small (1 2 ha) medium (2 4 ha) and large farmer families. The cost and returns for Holstein Friesian Jersey and mixed crossbreds vis a vis local cows and local buffaloes were studied and optimum feeding schedules (dry fodder equivalents and concentrate feed) at different milk production levels were also worked out based on the prevailing practices. The methods to minimize the cost of milk production for maximizing income were also suggested in the book. 192 pp.

Subject Index. Women may have been the first agriculturists as the steps from gathering roots and seeds to planting and cultivating food fodder fiber an…d fuel wood crops in small pockets are closely associated with them. In South East Asia most of the work in the fields is done by women and the system is deemed to be female. The figures from the International Labour Organization reveal that women are responsible for 50% of food production in the developing world. There is hardly any activities in agricultural production expect ploughing in which women are not actively involved. Seasonal migration by men counterparts imposes an extra burden on women as they have to cope with the dual responsibilities of own farm/wage labour and managing their children. Under these conditions women's participation in agriculture increases rather than decreases because of the migration and employment of men outside the village. Despite their major contribution to agricultural production and performing a large number of others activities such as attending off farm works animal husbandry processing of food for family use collecting of wood and water gathering fruits for family use and thus contributing a lot to the income generation of the family as a whole yet women were put under house wifezation and thereby excluding women altogether from the purview of policy making. In fact the agricultural development system had not yet taken farm women population seriously in the main stream of its development processes. Therefore it is high time that this issue is discussed and deliberated at the national and regional levels in order to sensitize people about its potentiality prospects and obstacles. The present book will provide information on various aspects of involvement of women in different on farm and off farm activities decision making economic contribution and drudgery undertaken by them. It is imperative for the planners and policy makers to have a composite index reflecting the extent of gender based inequality in wages in the society in order to make effective policies and programmes addressing the issues involved properly. 176 pp.

Government of India launched a watershed development programme during the year 1983 84 with an objective to develop natural resources viz. land water vegetation and productivity of crops in addition to improvement of standard of living of the people. Based on the experience gained during 1983 90 the Watershed Development Programme has been expanded further to cover larger areas. Government of India through its Ministries of Agriculture Rural Development forestry managed the Watershed Development Programme in India. Further it was allotted even to non governmental organizations under the policy of government and private partnership so as to execute the works more effectively. However NGOs concentrated on water resource development so as to improve the irrigated area for improving the livelihood security of rural people on watershed basis unlike government departments which concentrated on overall development of natural resources and agriculture production. There are number of books covering watershed development programmes written by many authors. Hence an attempt is made to cover all aspects of watershed so as to observe and judge the effectiveness and efficiency of the watersheds based on the development of natural resources agriculture and socio economic conditions. Thus many points are covered in this book. 200 pp.

Even after more than fifty years of development planning Indian economy continues to be agriculture based. The dependence of people on agriculture did not decline in a scale comparable to the reduction in the contribution of agriculture to the National Gross Domestic Product. Despite the significant progress in the overall development of the economy the rural urban disparities continue to be glaring. Still A very large majority of rural population dependent on agriculture and agricultural development is synonymous to rural development. Establishing Krishi Vigyana Kendras (KVK) (Farm Science Centres) is one of the key institutional innovations that sought to facilitate agricultural and rural development. Making the knowledge and other enabling resources in a relevant and readily usable form available to the rural population is the key mandate of KVK. Since the operational domain of KVK is the district where it is located it is in a better position to appreciate the local conditions. There are 580 KVKs in India to look after the rural development in their respective jurisdiction of the districts of each KVK. The KVK at CRIDA has the responsibility of contributing to the agricultural and rural development in Rangareddy District of Andhra Pradesh and is carrying out the works in collaboration with other research organizations in Hyderabad and all line Departments of State Government. This publication is an endeavour to put together information on the relevant technologies that are helpful to farm and household development. 168 pp.

All India Coordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture (AICRPDA) Hyderabad was launched by Indian Council of Agricultural Research during 1970 with 23 Cooperative Centres Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA) during 1985. Another scheme All India Coordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture (on agrometeorology has been functioning at CRIDA for the past two decades. Research efforts went deep into real issues to tackle the problems of drylands in India which covers to the extent of 65 per cent of total cultivated area of 142.8 million hectares. The contribution to national food production has declined from 80 per cent in 1951 to <40 per cent at present. Generally the productivity is much higher in irrigated lands in addition to assured harvest of crop and income unlike in drylands which has been affected with vagaries of monsoon. Hence research efforts to sustain production and income to dryland farmers has been going in and at present there are different technologies available to farmers who has chance to choose any package/component of technology based on his needs choices socio economic agronomic conditions because technologies are highly location and categories of farmers specific which needs careful selection and adoption for higher income. Even government of Canada supported AICRPDA by sending experts and sanctioning the budget for construction of buildings in addition to supplying equipments machinery etc. and expert's advice in research issues/projects. The experts of Canada were in AICRPDA/CRIDA during 1970 85. This period was divided into three phases viz. first phase (1970 75) second phase (1976 80) and third phase (1981 85). In first phase research projects covered identification of crops and varieties cropping systems (inter/sequence crops) soil and tillage and crop establishment practises fertilizer use weed control aspects etc. In second phase the joint collaboration of Indo Canada Project covered location specific integrated activities cropping systems pulses oilseeds cereals millets full utilization of agronomic practises fertilizer placement etc. whereas in third phase research on rainwater management (in situ and ex situ) appropriate cropping systems integrated nutrient management fertilizer use efficiency management of natural resources etc were covered. The Canadian experts lefts CRIDA later. CRIDA with 23 centres carried out research programmes on alternate land use systems refinement cropping systems etc. based on understanding the environment and socio economic agronomic conditions watershed management under different agro eco regions during 1986 90. Subsequently all efforts were put on sustainable agriculture resource characterization soil fertility and nutrient/energy management mechanization watershed development programme for sustainable crop production and income generation transfer of technologies evaluation of technologies etc. Hence it is felt that there is a need to write a book based on results at CRIDA AICRPDA centers (22) and AICRPAM centers (25) and experiences of authors who discussed with a number of scientists individually and on different forums. Thus it is an outcome of the experiences of authors in dryland agriculture research during the past 3 decades. 368 pp.
