Katalog Bergakademie Freiberg S. 727. - Xavier Wulfen (auch Wülfen und Wulffen) war Botaniker…, Mineraloge, Bergsteiger, Kenner der südöstlichen Alpen, Jesuit und Professor in Laibach und Klagenfurt. Er lehrte alte Sprachen, trieb Physik, Mathematik und Philosophie und - als Privatvergnügen - Naturforschungen. Die vorliegende Abhandlung erschien zuerst 1790 und zeichnet sich durch detaillierte Beobachtungen und einen geradezu flotten, bilderreichen Stil aus. - "Wulfen carefully describes this famous occurance of lumachelle or a fine-grained pale gray limestone in which are imbedded numerous mollusk fossils which display iridescent colors that sometimes are very striking and resulted in much use of the material of ornaments." Facsimile of Wulfen's Abhandlung vom Kärtner Bleispate (Vienna: 1785), a description of minerals found at Bleiburg (in Carinthia, Austria) that is one of the "finest examples of hand-colored mineral illustration." Among the minerals is the popular and eponymous wulfenite. This volume also includes a fascimile of the 1791 Latin translation of Wulfen's book, an English translation, a facsimile of an 1810 biography of Wulfen, a 1986 article on the Bleiburg site, and an introduction by Wilson.
