Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wide-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. This work is a catalogue of etchings by the French artist Charles Meryon. Meryon was a French artist who is known for being a pioneer and one of the most significant etcher on the nineteenth century. He worked in etching as he was colour blind. His masterpiece is generally considered to be 'Abside de Notre Dame'. Illustrated profusely throughout. Written by Loys Delteil. Delteil was a French engraver as well as being an art historian. Translated, edited and with additions by Harold J. L. Wright. With a booklet of addenda and errata loosely inserted. First edition (hardback), limited to 135 copies, of which this is copy number 112. 4to (28cm by 19cm), 114pp. 66 etchings and dry-points in the text, plus a signed dry-point as frontispiece (specially executed by Russell Flint for this book). Original blue cloth, gilt titling to the spine, top edge gilt. Generally a sound copy, with the binding tight and the contents clean, but please note that there are several lighter-shade streaks to the boards (probably the result of water being spilt on the binding at some point in the past), and the tissue protecting the frontispiece is creased.
