In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this important theological extensive treatise (title in English: "The rebuking of Bar-Jesus"), which was compiled and published by the English politician and writer Matthew Wren Junior (1629-1672), who based himself on the extensive writings - including a draft of the core text of this treatise - , that his father, Matthew Wren Senior (1585-1667), the influential bishop of Ely, and the uncle of the famous English architect Sir Chritopher Wren, had written during his 18-year imprisonment in the Tower of London. Because of his political and religious stances during the English Civil War, he was imprisoned by Parliament due to his strict High Church anti-Puritan policies under King Charles I.The work is a polemical defence against the Socinians, specifically targeting the theological arguments compiled in the "Racovian Catechism" (1605), a foundational 16th-century non-trinitarian statement of faith that formally structures the doctrines of Socinianism. The title draws directly from Acts 13:6-12, where the Apostle Paul encounters a Jewish false prophet and sorcerer, named Bar-Jesus (also known as Elymas). Paul rebukes ("increpatio") Bar-Jesus for perverting the right ways of the Lord and temporarily blinds him. By naming his treatise Increpatio Bar Jesus, Wren framed the followers of Socinianus as modern-day equivalents of the biblical magician. The text was incorporated in the same year in vol. IX of the series Critici Sacri, a massive nine-volume compilation of Latin biblical commentaries, edited by John Pearson.Re-backed, the edges of the boards are slightly rubbed, occasional minor staining. Otherwise in good condition.l ESTC R21103; USTC 3071543; Wing, W-3676. Contemporary calf, blind ruled along the edges, with a gold-tooled oval centerpiece: the stamp of "The society of writers to the signet" lettered around its coat of arms (this society is also known as the "WS Society", a prestigious, private association of Scottish solicitors dating back to 1594, and based in Edinburgh. The society maintains the Signet Library, Parliament House, Edinburgh); red painted edges. Re-backed: 20th-century gold-tooled spine with a (the original?) red morocco title-label lettered in gold. With a woodcut headpiece. Pages: [24], 762, [2] pp.…
