The result of thirty-five years' study by the owner of the world's most comprehensive inro collection, the Index contains 2,704 entries with more than 2,000 signature photographs gathered from public and private inro collections throughout the world. The text includes concise biographical details of the artists and a listing of the main publications and collections where their works are to be found, as well as Japanese characters for virtually all their names, and concludes with a character index and glossary of Japanese terms. The Index of Inro Artists is a major contribution to the study of Japanese lacquer and an essential guide to the understanding of one of the world's most important miniature art forms.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. English and Japanese text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 22 x 30.5 cm.; 1.6 Kg.; 245 pages with colour illustrations. 141 catalogue entries. Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket that has a tiny tear on the top left side of the front cover and wear marks on the top of the back cover. Good condition overall. ; Catalogue from an exhibition held from 20 November to 7 December 1990, with 141 catalogue entries from The Charles A Greenfield collection of Japanese Lacquer.; "All of the pieces on this catalogue are those which formed the major exhibition held in 1980 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the vast majority were in the prestigious exhibition 'The Magnificient Tree', at Japan House Gallery, New York, in 1972. Some have also been included in further museum exhibitions: 'Birds, Beasts, Blossoms and Bugs' held at the Univeristy of California in the Fredericks S. Wight Art Gallery in 1976 which continued at Asia House, New York, 1977. As this collection goes back so many years, it is not surprising to find that several of the pieces once belonged to the great connoisseurs of Japanese art, from the turn of the century. Mr Greenfield's meticulous notes have proved invaluable in compilling this catalogue, as has the Metropolitan Museum of Art's book of the 1980 exhibition by Andrew - now sadly out of print - to which we often refer. There are objects here from Gilbertson, Tomkinson, Yamanaka, Hayashi, Gonse, Bing, Vever, Mosle, Orange, Trower, Behrens, Gaskell, Hawkshaw, Rienaecker, Kitson, Bushell, Harari and Bess. Some boxes and inro were originally acquired from the collections of John Piermont Morgan, the American banker, and Efrem Zimbalist, the violinist. The Korin inro decorated with bellflowers reflects the influence Japanese art had on its previous owner: Louis Confort Tiffany (1848-1933), the famous Amarican designer. At the same time is worth noting that the name of Louis Cartier also appears as a provenance in this catalogue. The names of Bishop and Rogers deserve a mention too; they will be remembered for their donations of fine Chinese works of art to the Metropolitan Museum of Art." excerpt from the foreword by Luigi Bandini.
