In den Warenkorb12mo, pp. 21, [i] blank, [ii] contents, 154; a good copy in contemporary calf, later labels. Early ownership inscription of Stephen Miller. First edition. This is the first book by William Woty (1732-91), lawyer-turned-poet and a member of the Johnson circle: among the subscribers here are Garrick, George Colman the elder, Arthur Murphy and Johnson himself. Woty had a strong interest in the theatre, and besides Garrick and Colman there are also a number of theatrical personnel in the list such as Charles Fleetwood and Charles Holland, both of Drury Lane. Hayward notes William Mason as a subscriber, too, but this seems unlikely: plain 'Mr. William Mason' would be too modest a description for a fellow of a Cambridge college and an ordained cleric. More intriguing and unexpected is the subscription of 'Capt. Woolstonecraft', who must be the grandfather of Mary Wollstonecraft - he was a successful Spitalfields weaver who had been a captain in the militia. He died in 1765 when his granddaughter was six, and a copy of this book would perhaps have descended to his only living son, Mary's father Edward (1736-1803), whose drinking and violence she recalled with bitterness. Eddy & Fleeman 67; Roscoe, Newbery, A642; Hayward, English poetry, 177.

In den WarenkorbTwo volumes, 8vo, pp. [xvi], xi, [i], 159; [iv], 175; a sound copy in contemporary half sheep, a bit worn, label missing from volume II. First edition of the collected poems of Woty (1731?-91), who spent much of his life as a clerk to a solicitor and later worked as a grub-street hack. He seems to have known Samuel Johnson, who (perhaps because rather than in spite of his lowly status in the poetical hierarchy) subscribed to this collection, and also to his earlier Shrubs of Parnassus (1760). Johnson further helped Woty by contributing a life of Collins to The Poetical Calendar (1763) compiled by Woty with Francis Fawkes. Eddy & Fleeman 68.
