Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. Reprint. [a good sound copy, very slight bumping to lower tips, one-time owner's ink notes regarding date & place of purchase plus brief comment at top of front endpaper, on which there also appears the signature of a previous owner; NOTE also that the pages have a kind of brownish striation lines; the jacket is edgeworn, faded at the spine (but all text still readable), with light soiling and tiny bits of paper loss at several corners, a couple of closed tears internally tape-repaired]. "An Alan Miller Mystery," as were all three books by this admittedly psudonymous author, all of which were published in 1933 and 1934. (This title was originally issued by The Vanguard Press.) Alan Miller is described in the jacket blurb as "that oddity among detectives, a Chief of Polie in a suburban town whose wholesomeness and normalcy are a refreshing contrast to the prevalent crop of supersensitive sleuths." The book itself is described as a "somewhat unusual book -- an intelligent mystery story which has a considerable degree of urbanity and humor intermingled with an exhilarating series of thrilling and puzzling events." (For all those claims, though, it does follow a kind of Philo Vance-y style, by presenting the reader with detailed floor plans of the scene of the crime.) Co-author Yates, who was also quite active as a Hollywood screenwriter, later wrote a few additional mysteries under his own name; his collaborator Marshall apparently did not. The rear jacket flap biography of "Peter Hunt" is pretty funny: while admitting that the name is a pseudonym, it presents a long laundry list of the author's vitae -- schools, jobs (dozens!), etc. (I would tentatively assume these to be Yates's details -- "scenario writer" is buried in the middle of the list of jobs -- but haven't researched this.) It's possible this might have been some sort of book club edition: there is no printed price on the jacket, and the rear-panel blurb announces another title, "Coming Next Month," and in the fine print stating its availability "to members exclusively.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a well-made "Colorcopy" reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing, and see Notes for further explanation) [a bit of fraying to cloth at lower edges and tips, also at top of spine; otherwise a good sound copy, spine somewhat turned, with a previous owner's initials and date & place of purchase written in ink along edge of rear pastedown (hidden beneath rear jacket flap)]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front endpaper: "To / Mr. & Mrs. Swarts / in appreciation / for many / kindnesses / Peter Hunt." (Of course, "Peter Hunt" being a pseudonym, there's no way of knowing which of the two authors executed the inscription. My money's on Yates, although I've been unable to locate an example of his handwriting or signature for comparison purposes. What's curious, however, is that the rear jacket flap carries a three-paragraph biography of "Peter Hunt," with a birthdate and place matching that of Yates -- but is this actually a biography of him, or some semi-fictional amalgam? In any event, I think it's safe to assume that "Peter Hunt" inscriptions are very uncommon.) Murder embroils a prominent family, headed by a domineering old matriarch who "dominates this tale of mystery with the spiciness of her personality and tartness of her tongue," at their luxurious summer home in the Adirondacks. The Dell "mapback" paperback edition of this title is fairly common; not so the first edition. NOTE again that this book bears a "Colorcopy" reproduction of the original dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. (A "Colorcopy" jacket, as distinct from a facsimile jacket, is a color print of a raw (unrestored) scan of an original jacket, and therefore displays whatever flaws or blemishes were present on the original -- although in this case these are minor.) Signed by Author.
